So, I didn't really get into the SSB series until Brawl, and I immediately fell in love with it. Played around with it and finally settled in on Pit, who allowed me to range when I need to, but was also fast enough on the ground and in the air for me to be aggressive as well. I was never tourney good, but I was certainly better than your average casual player.

However, with 3DS out, I feel like I need to start from square one. Pit/Dark Pit have a different feel it seems, and the new controls are also throwing me off. Plus tweaked mechanics and all new characters have regressed my skills at the game immensely. So I've decided to not only start the game from square one and play with no real main, but also to sort of detail my process to you all in hopes that perhaps some of you will relate, post advise, or just chat.

I've started playing 1 v 1 with the computer lvl 7, both on random characters and random omega stages. This lets me eliminate any stage kills, and lets me find out what characters I show a good feel for. I'm an aggressive player; one who loves to set the pace and force the enemy to react to me, as opposed to the other way around. I chose lvl 7 instead of lvl 9 simply to allow myself a little bit of wiggle room; I may like the way a character feels, but may self destruct a couple times due to unfamiliarity.

Thus far here are the characters that I've had success with:
Dark Pit/Pit
Zero Suit Samus
Bowser
Donkey Kong
Ganondorf

Here are the ones that I was absolute trash with:
Shulk
Palutena

And here are the ones I'm iffy on:
Metaknight
R.O.B.

I'm rather surprised to find so many "heavy" characters on my good list; but I was able to handle the computer relatively easily. ZSS and Dark Pit are both speedy characters that suit my original playstyle. Shulk and Palutena simply didn't work out for me, the former came off as clunky and is just too much work to master for me to bother with, and Palutena's ground game is too bad for my style.

Metaknight and R.O.B. I won't write off yet, but I'm not the most comfortable with either. Metaknight's range seemed to hurt him, and R.O.B.'s ground game seems weak, though his projectiles are nice.

One last thing I should note: When I played brawl, I relied heavily on rolls. When this carried over to 3DS, I felt that I was moving around too much on the screen, and unable to really focus on what myself or my opponent was doing. So I've restricted myself to no rolls (or as little as possible; it's a hard reflex to break) so I can focus on timing my moves and finally adding grabs to my arsenal. I rarely used them before but realize that if I'm to be competitive, they're a necessity. Perhaps the no rolls is why I was initially successful with so many heavy's, who knows? Anyways, that's all for now, hope you found it interesting!
