typing from library. My interwebz is disconnected. Either the DSL cable or motorola modem is broken. How can I tell which one is dead without losing money on a guess?

Has it been dead for a while? It can just be the company sucking [it happens].
Either way I don't know. If the Modem has lights it's likely the cable, but I don't know.

It's been dead for a week now. We're having a guy coming to look at it, but it's gonna cost money and what not.
Hmm, usually the guy who comes out is free if the problem was their fault. They usually only charge if it was something you did.
Anyway, have you tried power cycling the hardware? Physically unplug the router / modem / computer and let it sit for a full minute. Then plug it all back in.
