My friend is probably a Melee hipster.

I have a friend who used to live near me who is a Smash Fan like me. His favorite Nintendo character is actually Fox. But because of Tier Lists, which he actually has no problem with, he is scared of using Fox. He told me it's because "Everyone else uses him". And he mains Link instead. I feel like he's actually being a bit out of character here. Any advice on what I can tell him to convince him it's fine using Fox?

Side note, I don't personally use Fox, but I do understand he's Top Tier because he's a good and viable character.

That sounds a bit like me actually, except the difference is I'm not a Star Fox fan but I am a Legend of Zelda fan XD. Anyways, if he actually likes Fox then there shouldn't be an issue with him using him.

He's actually good with Link. Not tournament level, but good. And yes, we play with the tournament rules and allowed stages.

hmm i almost feel like he will eventually get frustrated with link if he finds hes not making much progress , and you keep beating him , and then just switch characters

Tell him to try Fox with an open mind, and if he enjoys him to keep with it.

I convinced him to use Fox after all this time on the phone. He told me he's still ok with him. But he's gotten so used to Link, he won't stop using him. I mean, he has his combos, so I kinda see why. It's like me trying to drop Dr. Mario. I can't do it. Not that I'd try.

If he is good with link, he should keep playing him, but at the same time, keep fox as a secondary. Really, there is no problem with it as long as you and whoever else he plays with it is ok with it.

I have this same problem myself. I would tell him to try out each character for at least a month to get a feeling for each one and pick based off that.

Kidding again, YLink is superior.

One thing I can say for sure, Is that link has swaggy moonwalks, and can go for offstage unessecary swag kills. Learn to use the boomerand and arrows to edgeguard.

I couldn't agree more. I love that Fire Spike.

I TRIED getting him to use those, but he can't get the hang of them.

As for everyone else,
It seems Fox is now his secondary. I seem to have succeeded in getting him to stop acting the way he's been acting. Thanks for the advice.

Don't mean to be rude, but honestly, boomerang isn't even hard to use.
Arrows might take a bit of practice, and be less practical, but its probably worth him learning everything he can if he hopes to use a low tier. Also Remind him that young link is the same character, but a lot better and faster.

Sorry, I meant the moonwalks and the specific purpose of edgeguarding. I will in fact tell him about the edgeguarding again, but with the moonwalks, I'm not sure I can. And I'll TRY to throw Young Link into the mix.

Let him play who he wants. Whether they are a "low tier hero" or a "hipster" doesn't matter, as long as they enjoy the character they've chosen. Sometimes your favorite character might not be your best, or your favorite to play as, so you'll pick another that suits you more. As long as he's doing well there's no need to stop.

I just didn't want him to feel pressured to not use his favorite character. But I guess you're right. But he's sometimes playing Fox now anyway.

Link was the most popular for a long time, but he's really bad so people stopped. I think he's most popular compared to tier list position. tbh I think it's just as lame to play fox as link.

But then I main fox, so... XD

He's fun because he's got the most viable options and yet he can also do really suboptimal stylish stuff.

A lot of links switch to marth. Mostly just let him do whatever - it doesn't really matter who he plays if ya'll aren't gonna go to tournaments imo
