I will be attending my first smash 4 tournament this week, back when I lived in Maine I would play some melee tourneys here and there, but this is my first tourney in about 5 years as well as my first smash 4 tourney. Does anyone have any tips for me going into the tournament?

Playing defensively is better and far more rewarding in sm4sh than it was in melee. Don't be overzealous and approach too much.

Thanks dude, I'll definitely try that. With my current main in smash 4 (fox) do you think I would perform better with a character that has a more defencive style? I have good amount of experience on falco, marth, and a few others.

No, you should not focus too much on playing defensively. Just take into consideration this new game rewards defensive players more than melee did. So air dodging is extremely important as well as shielding, as always. But I would stick with Fox or Marth, just don't be approaching carelessly, opening chances for you to make mistakes.
