I finally downloaded Final Fantasy XI a couple of nights ago, and I unzipped everything and installed the massive thing just last night. Hopefully I'll be ready to go. I'll update this blog with my experiences as I go.

A friend of mine plays the actual game semi-regularly and he decided suddenly to convince me to download it to my computer, despite the fact that my computer is NOT built as a gaming machine; there's too much school junk on it.

I'm sort of a growing fan of the series, so he's pretty much determined to, in whatever short span of time we get to meet up, have me play every Playstation era Final Fantasy in existence, minus the spinoffs and sequels/prequels.

And with that, let the counting of days commence. Since I probably will forget how to count, feel free to correct anything that's absolutely wrong.

Day 1: Well, more like half of Day 1.

I picked out my Hume White Mage, and got ready to rock and roll in the city of Bastok.

...

Except for the minor problem of figuring out the controls first. It took me several minutes to figure out how to move, as a player cheered me on (what?). And then, after moving I consulted one of the NPCs, who's information was somewhat helpful, although at the time I hadn't figured out how to pull up the main menu to do this "Trade" thing she was talking about. And, since I couldn't figure out the menus nor could I figure out how to exit, I began to panic a bit.

So, with the assistance of my roommate who pulled up the task manager on my computer, I was finally out. After that, I decided to look around the title menu to see what the controls were, which, as it turned out, were controls I would've never figured out in the first place (I have a laptop, and most of the controls were keypad controls... which means copious use of the Function key for me).

With my newfound knowledge, my adventure truly began. I wandered around the port for awhile before I discovered how to reach the other districts, and I accepted a few quests and my first mission in the meantime. I quickly discovered that of the numerous shops in town, none of them sold anything in my price range (a pitiful 60 gil). I knew then I was going to have to fight things.

With that, I made my way to the mines, where I quickly discovered battles were going to be tough. As I made my first of many escapes, I wandered around town searching for a place to heal. After being in the solace of the Mog House, I noticed in the chat window a hint: talk to one of the guards. After heeding this advice, I received a Signet spell cast on me, which made life much easier with the HP/MP regeneration.

My quest in the mines continued, as I made my way gradually deeper in. I died a total of three times, with not a friend nor foe (aside from the one that killed me) in sight. Thus, waiting the entire hour was not an option. Once I realized I LOST experience due to this, I was particularly careful in choosing my fights (which for the longest time were against Ding Bats). Gradually, I became stronger, enough to take on the tougher Mouse Bats, and even that stupid Tunnel Worm that killed me with it's Stone spamming. I occasionally took trips back to the guards to recieve more introductory sidequests, one of which rewarded me with an emperor ring. This ring increases my experience gain by 50% over a certain amount of time. After a bit of confusion, I put it to use, gained a few more levels, and then realized it was waaaaaaaay past time to update this and also past time for me to go to sleep.

With that, I'm going to bed. My chronicle of Day 2 will begin... when I wake up next.

Day 2: Quite literally, nothing happened in FFXI. I spent the entire day doing homework.

Day 3: Late into the day, the friend that convinced me to start this called me to let me know he was online and so I met him on FFXI. A Hume Lvl. 75 Dark Knight. It was awkward for me to say the least, only managing to be Lvl. 9 by that point. Regardless, he showed me some chat commands (some too disturbing to describe here), and he helped me finish my second mission.

I learned some of the finer nuances of partying, such chatting within a party and using a text command to follow him so I need not manually control my character. I also reached Lvl 10 in a few battles after clearing the third mission (which he... helped me "cheat" on). After this, he switched to a job with less levels on it so we could level grind together. I reached Lvl. 11 in the process. After this, we started on a fourth mission, which led me far from the home town of Bastok. I know not where we ended up (except it was some beach town where I could take a boat to the other continent), and we met one of his friends there. At this point it was growing late, so all three of us after a rather hectic introduction (I panicked when I couldn't figure out how to chat in other modes). I look forward to my adventures tomorrow. ^_^
