I never really got into Nintendo until the Game Cube. Sure, I played the NES and SNES when I was little but I didn't become a real Nintendo fan until last generation. Maybe it was because of this that the Nintendo 64 feels like one big inside joke being made at my expense. Sure, I played a little bit of it when I was younger but to me it was never this ground-breaking piece of pure gold with game packs made of diamonds.

The first time I played a Nintendo 64 was when my older cousin got one many Christmases ago. However, the only games he had that interested me were Ocarina of Time and Mario 64, both I played extensively at his place when we visited. A few years later a friend of mine whose house I never really visited invited me and my friends over to play some game called Super Smash Brothers that he had gotten for his birthday. I found the game fun, really fun, to the point where the only game I would play on his 64 was Smash whenever I was over. The game impressed my sever-year-old mind to the point where I suddenly had an interest in Nintendo. When I found out about this thing called the Game Cube from my cousin and that it would have Smash Bros on it I instantly started saving up for one. Eventually I bought one and played it extensively with friends and by myself.

It wasn't until years after the Game Cube's launch that I started getting involved with connecting with my fellow gamers through the power of the internet. To my surprise, I found many were claiming the N64 to be one of the greatest consoles out there. I found my opportunity to check out this amazing machine when I picked up a Nintendo 64 along with four controllers and Mario Party 2 from a yard sale for ten bucks (thank you parents who don't know the actual value of their kid's old stuff). I purchased many games for it ready to dive into some pure Nintendo bliss, only to be surprised that the console wasn't exactly what I thought it would be.

For those of you who could care less about the back story and just want my opinion, read on from here. I'll keep it short.

I bought and tried several games. Mario 64 I found enjoyably nostalgic but I couldn't deny that I had enjoyed Mario Sunshine more. Star Fox 64 was also fun, but again I found that I liked it's Game Cube successor (Assault) more. It was this way with many games, I liked GX more than X, Melee more than Smash 64 and Mario Party 4 more than 2. It felt that all of the console's greats were just... lacking and were unrefined when compared to later installments. Many games, if not the console as a whole, I found had been crippled by the hands of time. My friends and I all agreed that Golden Eye wasn't fun, Banjo Kazooie felt like just another platformer and most of the games didn't feel like they controlled well.

After trying game after game it just kind of ended up sitting in a box and collecting dust, forgotten by me due to the fact that I didn't have that much fun whenever I took the time to hook it up. I ended up trading it to a local used games store and got a good price on it. Glad I did because it was just taking up space anyway.

Makes sense, I think the main motivation to play old games (for me at least) is the nostalgia.
Without that they're just games imo, what you describe is what I felt with Pokemon Red which I bought after playing my first Pokemon game, Ruby. Sure it was a fun game and it was cool to play something old, but I saw it more as the game it was and not as fond childhood memories.

You're right. Without nostalgia behind them most old games become just that, old games. It was cool to see the 3D origins of franchises I had grown to like on the GCN but many N64 titles just weren't anything special to me.

For OoT & MM I think that while it is not my favorite zelda games (My favorite Zelda game is the Gameboy Advance port of Triforce of the Gods.) I think they are really well done, and a bit more difficult and entertaining than some of the more recent zelda titles (Ingnoring possibly Wind Waker which I have not gotten around to playing yet so my opinion does not extend there.)

Now I can not speak for starfox simply because I have not played a single starfox game.

As for mario I actually agree with you.

Though talked about in your blog I did not see your current opinion on Super Smash Bros. 64. You might of had your reasons (given where you are in the internet), and if you do not with to disscuss it please say so, I would like to talk about it with you though.

Smash 64? I think it's one of the best games for the Nintendo 64 but the roster feels kind of limited and the controls kind of stiff these days. It's not a bad game and is certainly still fun to play but I feel like the whole game was rendered obsolete once Melee came out.

Star Fox 64 is still viable because they haven't really tried to remake it. Both 64 and Assault work because they are so different, though truthfully, I haven't played much Assault.

To be fair, I have similar issues with early PS1 games.

I think it's just games from that era in general that didn't age well. I think it has something to do with the fact that at that time we were just learning how to do 3D games thus meaning that many of those games don't feel nearly as polished or as fun as later ones.
