Muddy Mole, probably not who you're thinking of.

Admit it, most people upon hearing the name "Muddy Mole" will usually picture one of the ubiqitous moles from Super Mario World. Those are Monty Moles, by the way. Sadly, not many people are even aware of who he is, or even got a chance to play his game, something which I'm sure would bum out Shigeru Miyamoto just a little bit.

Muddy Mole comes to us from the gameboy game, Mole Mania, a creation of Shigeru Miyamoto. Picture a combination of the old Adventures of Lolo style puzzles, with the Legend of Zelda style exploring and fighting.

Each 'world' in Mole Mania consists of dozens and dozens of rooms connected via sealed off doorways, and underground passages. In order to progress through these worlds for a shot at fighting the boss characters and saving his family, Muddy needs to use his skills of burrowing and digging, hurling large objects, and shoving things around with his big ol' digging claws.

A typical level will see Muddy burrowing underground to navigate an alternate path, digging holes to avoid enemies, throwing large balls of iron around to smash through doorways, tossing about cabbages for health, and a lot of strategic thinking on where you need to get that iron ball to go so you can sneak through that particular room.

Along with this there are the boss fights as mentioned earlier, in which Muddy goes one on one with creatures like an animate one-ton weight, a boxing kangaroo, a sentient sun, a snowman that splits into smaller copies, and so on.

Some reports indicate that Masahiro Sakurai has already expressed interest in Muddy Mole, saying, "he's so interesting, he might even be on the roster already!" If this were true, it would only take the confirmation of Muddy and Captain Olimar to have every Shigeru Miyamoto designed lead-character in Smash Brothers.

Of course Muddy himself is no slouch. In battle he has his large, shovel-like claws that could definitely slap other characters around. Producing and flinging rolling projectiles would also be something he could do, but the one thing that would really set Muddy apart from the other fighters would be his digging.

Imagine a fighter who had the ability to burrow underground during a fight to avoid damage or detection, and then shoot back up elsewhere to attack? Or someone who could attack enemies directly below him on a pass-through platform by attacking straight down through the platform with his claws.

And it would be nice to see a character who represents a franchise that's only been on the original 'brick' gameboy...

i like your sig. muddy has been discussed quite a bit. Sakurai's comment was really weird. Why would he bother saying something like that if Muddy wasn't in the game? To be evil? Maybe, but I don't think so. Muddy is definitely in IMO.

I've never heard of the game, but that sounds like a really interesting character. I would love to see something along those lines appear in Brawl, and the character sounds like he's made for Brawl.
If Shigeru likes him that much, his chances of making it into Brawl would be pretty high, at least higher than you'd expect from an obscure original GB game. Just reading that post I almost wish he made it in, at least as an AT.

P.S. Olimar for Brawl!

Ay, and Mole Mania really is a great game. Makes you think, but doesn't punish you too viciously for when you make the mistakes you're bound to make on the more complicated puzzles.

Muddy himself shows off a great deal of personality in the between-level animations when he plays with his kids, and the final battle between Muddy and Jinbe is pretty exciting.
