Here, a politician speaks out about the moral downfall of America. Is there such a thing?
This post will disprove the claims that we are losing morals. My uncle was a high schooler in the super major conservative 50s, and he was moving from high school to high school nearly every month, all across the south, or the Bible Belt, if you prefer. He told me flat up that the only difference between hippies and teenagers in the 50s was that in the 50s people kept it hush hush. A girl would walk around acting like a virgin, while sleeping with people from other schools everyday.
Also, if we look at Kensky's report on sexuality at the time, and compare it to modern numbers when we factor in his mistakes (he said that 11% of people were gay, when that number was first believed to be too small, and is now believed to be slightly too big). He revealed some very shocking information, even today, one being that 38% of men have climaxed from a homosexual experience, to name one figure, among many.
People's moral instincts are not falling or slipping. What is slipping is people's discomfort with revealing and discussing such personal matters, but in an age when you NEED to know how active your partner is, because we know about STDs (there are reports of harpies long before hippies and even electronic devices, some even suggest cave plantings depicting these symptoms, STDs are nothing new, just a new discovery). This change can be contributed to our quickly expanding social networking systems transferring to a larger sense of global involvement. Before, people had to keep things a hidden, or be kicked out of their community, today, people are able to connect with people of similar feelings, religious denominations, and social standings, allowing people to feel more open and secure in themselves. This can largely been seen in the"loud and proud" gay movement we see today.
I would also like to remind people that this hard core conservative generation we see today was once the hippie generation, and this transition is not because they became older. The generation before them were notorious liberals, mostly because of their experiences through the Great Depression, Roaring 20s, and the 2 Roosevelts, as well as, but to a small extent, JFK.
So I ask, were the hippies really as liberal as they claimed, or just mad that they didn't have any of the money, but the older generation was clinging on to it. Time magazine predicted a transfer of wealth in America, but it continued to post pone its date every decade, till it finally stopped reporting it. The depression generation seemed content hanging on to their money, and had no intention in passing and spreading their wealth through the next generation. Was the entire hippie movement in clash with this? Its possible. It is also possible that the hippies were simply war scared, having been raised on the fear of the great Atomic war, and seeing graphic deceptions of the Vietnam War. However, based off their current voting patterns, their styles in executive businesses (points towards predatory lending executives), and even their influence to the arts, as explained by Frank Zappa here, shows that they did not truly believe in these hippie idealism.
