I am trying to change the Character Portrait in-game. (The one that displays the percents and stocks).
Using Brawl Costume Manager. (InfFace251.brres (Lucas Stock) is the example I am using)
I can change this for characters like Roy and Dr.Mario, because they have no files on the SSBB disk, they are on the SD card. When I try to do this for characters like Lucas the files are not present.
That being said, I have downloaded external CSP and BP packs that contain all the InfFace.brres files. I then proceeded to add it to the correct folder, Brawl Costume Manager then allowed me to change the file. When I then proceeded to play PM, I encountered an error. The game would freeze and make a buzzing noise when I entered a stage. This probably happened due to there being two identical files, so the game crashed.
From my understanding (I may be wrong), you can modify these files for Brawl using the appropriate applications. But then I would have to dedicate my SD card slot to Brawl texture editors thus preventing me from playing PM.

I would really like to have the ability to change this file, and be able to play PM.

I am at a loss of what to try or do now. Any help is appreciated.

If you're just trying to edit that one file, use BrawlBox instead. Crashing when entering a stage usually means the game tried to load a corrupt/non-existent file pertaining to one or more of the characters selected, so my guess is that Brawl Costume Manager corrupted the InfFace251.brres file somehow.

I don't think it is corrupted though. It is just a conflicting file problem. I tried it with BrawlBox with the same results.

"Conflicting files" shouldn't be a problem - otherwise Project M wouldn't even exist, since technically every file in it except Roy, Mewtwo, and the new costumes "conflicts" with another file on the disc. The file patch code just makes the game load the files on the SD card instead of the files on the disc, so the issue does lie somewhere with your InfFace file.

Is the image you're inserting the correct dimensions (48x56)? Is the image format CI8, and the palette RGB5A3? Is the InfFace251.brres file compressed?
