As for Metal Mario, generally he's slightly smaller than Mario, which IDK why, has more friction than any other character, same speed as Luigi, falls more than twice as fast as Mario, and has exactly twice the gravity as Mario. He also attacks harder than Mario, and also weighs the same as Mario, Luigi, and Fox, which is 100.
I for one play Metal Mario a lot lately for like about a couple years now, I think about a year or two after Project64 was released. I tried to find out what makes him better/worse than Mario, and came up with this:
People were asking, "If Metal Mario was playable in the first place, what tier would he be at?"
A lot of people would say he's god-like-broken than Metaknight
My answer (in my opinion) is between Kirby and Fox; A Tier, Rank 2.5
Reason:
Metal Mario never flinches at very weak attacks, like jabs, or weak projectiles, like Fox's lasers. He's the hardest out of all the characters to be KO'd vertically, by like almost 3x the vertical KO percentage as Mario's, but he can be KO'd horizontally pretty easily. He's got a farther ledge-grab range than Mario surprisingly. He can KO players slightly sooner than an average Mario player. He's also hard to get comboed due to not flinching any weak attacks and having very high gravity. It takes Metal Mario to get KO'd horizontally at a range from "sooner than unexpected" to "very hard." The best counter picks are characters with a good grab game, or characters with hard-hitting attacks. Though I'd say Captain Falcon, cause of his Up-B, but that's just me. :/
Notes:
He has to be played different than what normal Mario players play. I'd play him like a combination of Link, DK, and Mario. Link, for having poor recovery, and low jumps; DK, who can do singular big damage, and is excellent at edge-guarding; Mario, for having the complete same moveset. If you have a high percentage as Metal Mario, be very cautious when near the edge, cause you'll fall off pretty quickly. Remember, he's limited when making combos, cause he jumps 25% lower than Mario, giving him the lowest jumps in the game. For the heck with it, his jumps are so low, he has to use both his jumps just to get on the side platforms on Dreamland, so it's best to use his Up-B at certain situations. Metal Mario players don't always go at the highest point of a stage, but when they do, it means that they'll recover a bit easier, and do whatever it takes to stay on that platform, or recover from a hit that would knock the player off the stage entirely.
Other than that, Metal Mario is just a better-version of Mario, in general. He just has to be played differently, and different combos (with few being slightly similar) and pressure game is what makes him different than Mario.
