Me and my friends are all vivid smash players, but when they all found Project M, they want to start using that over melee, which I'm fine with. My only problem is I myself don't have access to a wii at the moment, only my trusty gamecube. So I was wondering which melee character transitions the best into PM, with the least amount of changes, so that way I can practice on melee but still have the ability to play my best against them. Thanks for any help!

Mario is pretty much his melee moveset, same for Fox and Falco.
(Also, if you have don't have a Wii because you got a Wii U to replace it, you can still use the Wii U to play PM if you didn't know already.)

Fox and Marth are nearly carbon copies of their melee selves. Falco and Sheik have slight differences but are overall very similar.

Fox, Marth, and Peach all translate well; the differences where they exist are pretty easy to pick up. Mario, Link, Falcon, and Ganondorf are also pretty close in my opinion, as they're mostly just better versions of their Melee selves. There are others that transfer reasonably well if you just pick up a couple of new mechanics, which you'd want to do anyway.

Roy's fairly easy to pick up if you've played Marth in my opinion.

If you have a decent computer, consider practicing with Dolphin. There are some minor differences in Brawl's physics engine that have carried over to PM. Threw me off for a while when I first picked PM up.

Marth, Captain Falcon, Ness, Link, Donkey Kong, Fox, Sheik, Kirby, and G&W all feel basically the same to me. All changes I can perceive are related to the engine more than the characters.

The Melee top 7 are pretty much the same. However with all the new characters and MUs Jiggs sucks in PM.

Fox, Falco, and Marth are basically the same as they are in Melee but now with Brawl mechanics like RAR.

Falcon is almost exactly the same except that now he can grab the ledge with Raptor Boost.

Peach is just a buffed version of Melee Peach with a new Utilt and makes good use of the Brawl technique know as Glide Tossing.

Sheik is the same except for Dthrow.

There is also Mario who is just a buffed mix of Mario and Dr. Mario.

Every Melee character who was considered higher tier, although anyone who wasn't Fox, Falco or Sheik recieved minor to large buffs overall.

He asked for how they transition, and they all still pretty much play the same, no matter what buffs/nerfs happened.

I wasn't responding to your post, it was a direct answer to his question. He asked who transfers best - lower tiers in Melee do not.

Yeah, really this. The only dillio with him is you need to work like twice as hard as most other characters. Try watching arguably the best Roy in the world, Sethlon, he beats quite a few of the big names, but he seems to have a tough time with guys like Mew2King (Let's be honest who doesn't, and I don't count you Wizzrobe). I'm pretty sure I'll be proven wrong soon though. Just watch some of Sethlon matches, his Roy puts in serious work, and even then it's still hard to win with him.

Also, I meant to include this earlier about Sethlon's Project M, just some examples of his matches.

Weird that swordie skill only seems to go one way. I've got a decent Roy in both Melee and PM, but can't play Marth to save my life.

Most of the characters play the same, especially high/top tiers. I mained Falco in Melee and everything carried right over to PM. The only really noticeable thing at first is a bit of a speed difference, but when you adjust you'll be just as quick.
But yeah for the most part it's about the same, with the exception of nerfs/buffs to some characters.
