So all the old pros are coming out of hiding! I feel like with evo and mlg bringing back smash is reviving it for another glorious run!

Yeah, Melee's been back for a year or two. It's bigger than ever right now. Not to get in your face about being late to the revival or anything. I'm excited too.

Melee Revival -> Revival of Melee -> RoM -> 2009. Just a few years late.

So... More than a year or two late.

As a matter of fact, Melee revived, then it's numbers went back down for a bit, then there was a second Melee Revival.

The 2nd revival is referring to EVO 2013 and The Smash Bros documentary, right? I think that ever since the 1st revival, Melee's tournament numbers were sustained pretty well. I'm not sure if there was enough of a dip during that time to 'kill' it. It's more of a big boost than a revival

This is what I was referring to, yes.

But yeah, you're right, its numbers slightly dipping in-between was pretty inconsequential. Was speaking in hyperbole for comedy.

Bro, do you even eSports?

Seriously though what other competitive fighting game, or even what competitive videogame can say it's still thriving after 14 years. Very very few, it's impressive.

Melee had a few unique factors that helped it live as long as it has so far. It had a bad sequel that half of the community refused to convert to. Other games' sequels are often good enough to adopt. Most might say Smash 4 is an improvement to Brawl, but they'ed also say that it isn't good enough

The Smash communities have kind of been isolated from the FGC and even from other Smash games. It created a few walls that kept some players from converting. The isolation even helped Brawl. Despite being a bad game, it still had an active tournament scene until it EVO 2013 (5 years). If a game as bad as Brawl was in the FGC, it wouldn't retain its own players well at all because there'd be a selection of better games to convert to. SFXT and Injustice are pretty close examples that come to mind

Also, Smash games sell very well which brings in a lot of potential players/viewers. It's popular enough that like half of everyone's gamer friends play it. And it's the easiest fighting game to learn. Anyone can jump in and quickly know what they're doing
