Melee character similar to PM lucas?

Hey everyone :D

I am a casual smash player looking to get into the competitive scene and have only recently tried playing PM. I LOVED IT. None of the other smash games have felt so good in my hands, and I've been playing 64 and melee for years. I think the main reason PM just felt so natural to me is because I found a character that I click with, lucas. In melee I've never been able to find that one character that just felt right. I've tried practicing marth, pikachu, and falco but can't stick to just one.

What I am asking is what character in melee feels the most like lucas in PM? I loved melee, but I truly suck at it compared to the other smash games. My 64 jiggs is pretty solid, but 64 is a completely different game from melee or PM.

When I first played PM I knew from watching tourneys that I wanted to try lucas, and although I lost the first match, I consistently began beating my coworker who practices smash vigorously (albeit he wasn't using his mains :p). I was picking up the combos in minutes and everything just felt really easy. It could be due to the fact the pm is "easier" than melee, but I think it is also primarily because I just really liked lucas lol.

I dunno if this thread is in the right place, but to make note of something, liking a character helps, yes.

If I can be completely honest, though, I don't think there's a single character in Melee who feels/plays anything like Lucas. But if you insist on someone picking one, I'd say he's most similar to Falco and Ness. Falco because of his Neutral game set ups (Ness sort of for that too?), and Ness primarily for DJC, recovery, magnet stall, etc. Other than that, I dunno what to tell you. Lucas is super-unique and I'd recommend not worrying about Melee if you like PM Lucas that much.

Sorry I don't know how to forum haha :D (Where would I put this in the future?)

Hmmmm that makes a lot of sense. I do like falco the most out of all the characters I've tried to practice seriously, but I might give ness a shot, because even if he is low-tier I would rather feel comfortable with him than be bad at a high tier.

I would love to focus my time solely on PM but I don't have a Wii of my own so I can't play it as much as Melee or 64. When I start going to tournaments I'd also like to be somewhat competent at all games just to be able to play as much as possible.

Thanks for the help! :D

I would recommend Falco, personally. He moves at a similar pace, his short hop neutral B can be utilized much like PK Freeze, his down B can be used to counter a lot more projectiles than Lucas's can, his down air can be used to spike significantly easier than Lucas's back air, and his shine pressure is much better than Lucas's if you can master it. About the only things he lacks that Lucas has are recovery and a tether grab. Sure, they're very different characters, but if you can play Falco well fundamentally in Melee or PM, I think you should be able to play Lucas similarly well.

Falco does seem to be the one character in melee that I can stick with for more than a day lol. I'm gonna keep at it with him, hopefully once I get my wavedashing and l-cancels to be consistent that will help a bunch :D

Definitely falco. For Lucas you magnet->jump cancel(wavedash out of it)->aerial follow up. For falco you shine->jump cancel->aerial follow up. Also the lasers are kinda similar to ice balls.

Lucas = Falco + Fox + Ness - weaknesses + tether

So I suggest you pick up these 3 characters and get used to not recovering as well.

I'm late to the party, but in case you need yet another stamp of approval, go Falco! I don't know if I would suggest Ness, simply because they have similar abilities but they're executed differently.

As an example, PK Thunder is buffed to hella in PM, so I've become quite used to going off stage for finishers and then rocketing back up, in fact that's how I K.O. 90% of the time. I play Melee and PM frequently, but I find that when I try to return to Melee and find that PKT is slower and weaker than the version that my mind is used to I begin taking risks that ultimately come back to bite me in the ass.

Now that I think about it though, it's quite possible that Lucas's PKT in PM is more similar to Ness Melee's so it's really just something you'll have to figure out. There will be other things alike though. I used to main Lucas and Ness back during the beginning of PM. I was use to certain combos with Ness, my mind knew them. So you can imagine how surprised I was when I, without realization, started a Ness combo with Lucas and got pwned. It just doesn't work the same. But I hope you figure something out!

Oh, and welcome to Project M. We hope you enjoy your stay.

Thanks for the comments! I picked up ness last night just to see how he feels and I was actually pretty impressed! He has some pretty good aerials and his throws seem to have combo potential, but I need to test with DI CPU's first :p I'm still probably going to mainly practice falco but it would be cool to main an Earthbound character in all three games (I can't decide between ness and jiggs in 64 atm :/ )

P.S. do you ever actually dair with ness to spike in melee? It is the most satisfying thing to hit that I've found so far, but doesn't seem very viable since it is sooo hard to time :p

I'd recommend anyone but Falco, but that's because he and Fox are why I find Melee dead boring to watch nowadays.

That said, even after the changes I still consider Lucas to be a faster version of Ness and Zelda, so maybe try those.

I tend to agree with you there, although some falcos that don't laser camp too much can be pretty darn exciting :p For some reason at MLG anaheim I was super hyped about a lot of the fox dittos, usually they bore the poo outta me :D
