Smash 3DS Max combo??

One of the challenges asks me to get a max combo of 40 in Training mode. But I'm having trouble figuring out what this game's definition of a combo is. I try some of my usual stuff with Ness like PK Fire into grab into down throw into a few fairs, but the combo count keeps resetting to 1. I'm not sure what it wants.

Pick Ness, set damage to 999, grab, pummel as fast as you can

Or just spawn in 4x Smart Bombs and let the magic happen

Four smart bombs + Samus/Mii Gunner's final smash easily does the trick, and quickly too.
