Hey everyone. Me and one of my buddies were doing some Fox vs Falco matches last night and got 8 of them recorded. Fox is currently my secondary character behind Marth and I have been striving to get him better. I have been competitively playing smash since September of 2006 (Not that long ago) and I have somewhat been struggling to take my game to the next level. So with that said, I would appreciate it if some of you would take a look at these matches and let me know what I can do better.

Also note, the person that I am playing against is a friend of mine that has yet to experience tournament play, and has taken everything he knows into his own hands, so please don't judge some things by "Your opponent kind of sucks" or whatever. Thanks!

A wise Samus player once told me, "Don't play with your food."

You played way too much. Falco should have been gone around 70-80%. You move too slow for a Fox, and you miss too many L-cancels. Make sure you hit those, especially when you can get served by a Falco.

Match 1: You were getting SHFFL pwnzed, you had a good grab or two in there but you need to work on being more mobile out of your shield. Work on Shield Dashing with Mark and Fox, and you could practice things like shining out of shield (JC shine in place) and jumping out of shield into a platform dash. Your biggest problem was that once the lasers started you were glued to your spot and unable to fight or respond to his approaches.

You also need to work on your edgeguarding. Charging smashes and hoping he runs into them is meh. When you throw Falco off, immediately edgehog, like fast like woah. If you're afraid of getting illusioned remember you can spike him out of it. From there it's best to attempt to shinespike or backair, and get the kill, but you can try to just hog him/punish on stage illusions with a grab or shine... basically keep your options open, but specifically practice being FAST on that edgehog. Another trick you can do is to drop a backair on the ledge so you just barely slide off it and instantly hog, which is fun and effective, and not too difficult, and you could also try replacing those charged smashes with jabs, which can lead to grab, usmash, dtilt, or any number of things that are all really good vs. Falco.

More in a few, but those are the two big things I saw.

Match 6: Good stuff, nice waveshininging to counter his CCing, try throwing in some wave dtilts in there because that hits CC and no-techs after a shine and have great range and good combos. Missed a few L-cancels, that happens. Work on angling your recovery to go around common edgeguards like the spike and forward smash so he has to mix it up. Wall riding and going just wide and falling to grab the ledge are good stuffs.

That fox needs some much improvement >_>. CHeck out the guides around you might find something new, also watching other fox players may help you in your match ups, Watch LunINspectra and KeepSpeedOn, those are pretty good foxes.

OMG!! You have the same problem as my friend, you need to learn the basics, you can't just skip it and go straight to the wavedash combos and waveshines, Yeah those are important for your game but they're nothing without the basics, my basics is what pwns at the tourneys, work on the edgehogging.

yeah, your fox needs to play faster, land more l-cancels, and note that shine infinites don't really work to well on falco. I have a fairly bad record against falco, and from experience, you need to mix it up a bit more (although, i'm still working on that part...)

You should just chaingrab him 0-death. A good way for you to finish him off quick is to grab him at low percents (the lower, the better) then up-throw->shine. When he falls off the stage, go for a quick shine spike. Gimp the falco as much as you can and you'll win a lot more.

Think. if something doesn't work, don't do it. Don't be stupid. pretty obvious isn't it. o.o

Everybody only gives advice on tech skill -.-

You can beat a super technical fox who doesn't think by just thinking. =)

Thinking>tech skill.

Although I agree that you should work on your tech skill. Missing L-cancels is definately a no-no.

You can't really teach someone to think better. That's something gained with experience. Any advice you can give to improve thinking is vague and difficult to express.

You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink.

It's easier to give advice if you ask more specific questions, such as:

What's the best way to deal with a SHL'ing Falco when he already hit me with a laser?

What are generally the best ways to edgehog a Falco?

Etc etc.

The more specific you are, the more specific people can be in response. :)
