Pivots, fox trots, running pivot into tilts, etc., are all strategies I see a lot, but it's hard to do it. Especially to get just the precise movement that you need. What are some good tips for practicing these kinds of things? I'm good at short-hopping, but that's about it. The others are still firmly in "amateur" camp for me.

You have to spend time in practice mode. You'll get it within an hour.

Really? That easily, you think? I like to think I'm a gamer extraordinaire, but....

What things do you think I should practice? What order would be best, do you think?

You kind of need a visual learning experience to really understand it. Mastering the special movements isn't as prominent, like in Melee, but it's still a cool thing to know how to do. So I'd recommend just watching videos on the matter. The person will usually show their hands on the controller, so you can understand the flicking, and what not.

Pivot cancel is the most important. If you don't know it, an opponent landing behind behind you unexpectedly will change your position from offensive to defensive AT BEST. If you know it, not only do you have a better chance of not getting combo'd/smashed, you might even punish it.

I'll go search for some videos and guides to the different types. Do you happen to know if there are any that talk about the various types of special movement and how to perform them?

Thank you! You have been very helpful. :)
Hey man try this,
In training mode:
Focus 100% on successfully doing a certain advanced technique or combo you wish to be fluent in. Repeat it endlessly. Before you know it, you'll be doing it at an above average pace in regular games!!! Trust me!!!
Good luck :)
