Hey everyone. I'm not entirely new to smash but I am new to melee as a competitive player. As a result, I'm still learning the basic techs like wavedashing. My question is, based on your personal opinion, how hard is Marth to play for a beginning player. On a scale of 1 to 10. Also give me some things to keep in mind while I'm playing! I am doing all the research I can in my spare time but I thought it's be nice to hear some individual opinions from other players. Any input is super awesome! Well thanks for reading and replying in advance if you do!

I feel like he's easy to play against people who aren't that good, at my school we call him the "noob-killer". At high level, he doesn't require as much tech as the spacies but he's definitely harder to learn than Sheik. I encourage you to watch tutorials on Ken/PewPewu playing Marth as they cover all of the tech every Marth main should know.

He's really easy to pick up but hard to master. As a new player you definitely need to make sure you don't start making bad habits like f-smash spam as you will get punished. But yeah, he is pretty okay for new players so go for it.

Marth is good character to learn how the game plays. If you do dumb stuff he gets punished (hard!), if your movement and spacing is on point then he goes a really long way with just the basics.

To quote PPMD
"Marth is a good rules character.
1. dont swing so much
2. Dtilt dtilt dtilt
3. grab whenever you can"

My spin
1. Dont swing your sword (fsmash, nair and approaching fair) especially if you dont know for a fact that it will hit your opponent.
2. Dtilt is a great move that most Marth's need to use more to force the opponent to respect your space that your sword can take.
3. Use your great mobility to weave in and out of your opponents range and then once you force a whiff dash into a jump cancelled grab or wavedash into grab. Then its just marth juggle stuff depending on their character, percent and di

If you're playing beginners he's like 2/10 in difficulty maybe even 1/10.
When you're getting to mid level with all the tech skill i'd say he'd be 4/10 compared to rest. He does have some top tier movement and aerials you need to practice.
I can't really say anything about high level because i'm also a scrubbadub but it think he'd be something like 7/10 because you'll need very good spacing and mindgames and all the cool stuff to win your games.

As a newer player myself who tried to pick up Marth, I think that the most difficulty for a newer player lies in executing damaged opponents. Setting up for a Dair spike, edge guarding or doing the proper spacing and reads for a tipper F-Smash was key while racking up damage with air juggling seemed fairly easy to me which sometimes caused the opponent to still stand on the stage while having above 150% because I failed at finishing. Getting those chain grabs on spacies was a little bit tricky for me as well.
Wavedashing and short hopping was not too big of a deal since Marth's jump squat animation is 4 frames (as far as I remember?) which is long enough to consistently short hop as a newer player while it still makes the timing for Wavedashing not too difficult. And like other people here said, spacing is very important with Marth.

Since my knowledge of the game is limited (like I said, I'm also new) I can't give an exact number though. But yeah, compared to many other characters, Marth is probably one of the easiest to learn.

People staring out Marth will be a great choice but if you get farther in the level he starts to get harder to master

Charmander was my starter.

But Marth is all about spacing. So if you want to play him, I wouldn't play with any other characters until you get Marth down. You can't play Marth like a Fox and expect results right? So keep on Marth until you got everything down.

If that was confusing, then try this. You can't play Marth successfully if you have overly aggresive habits from other characters.

I picked up Marth when I first got into competitive smash, expecting to learn the basics and switch back to Fox, but I ended up really liking Marth's playstyle. As a starter character he's great; fantastic dash dance, fantastic wavedash, his SHFFLs aren't the easiest or the hardest to execute, and he teaches you the importance of spacing. He does hit a mid-level wall when people start baiting out your attacks and being able to combo effectively, because Marth's weight makes him combo bait. But almost every person I teach to play this game I recommend start with Marth, even if they know they'll want to switch once they get the basics.
