Mario Kart 7 or Mario Kart 8?

I have a 3DS XL now. I'm holding out to get a Wii U in late Nov. for Black Friday (hoping for a good sale, deal or bundle or something).

So should I get Mario Kart 7 now? Or should I hold out and get Mario Kart 8 instead?

I'm going to personally say hold out, just because I like the feel of playing Mario Kart on a console with a sizable controller better. I could definitely see there being a bundle for Mario Kart (and one for Smash, if it's out by then), so you could nicely kill too birds with one stone by grabbing that.

Hold out for Mario Kart 8. It offers a lot and there are those DLC packs with even more content.

Everywhere and nowhere, all at once

To be more specific, Mario Kart 8 is better than Mario Kart 7 based purely on its mechanics. The anti-gravity mechanic is surprisingly fun and doesn't feel gimmicky in the slightest. It also has Mario Kart 7's cart customization and glider/submarine mechanics. The only places where Mario Kart 8 pales in comparison to its predecessor is the Battle Mode, which works better in number 7. But Battle isn't really what Mario Kart is about, is it?

I'unno, it made me a special kind of sad to hear that they got rid of classics like Block Fortress and Skyscraper. Agreed on everything else, though! Honestly, anti-gravity just seems like driving at fun angles where you get bonuses for smacking into crap.

... Y'know, come to think of it, nor do I. I guess Block Fort just made that huge of a difference since everything went all chaotic and pear-shaped once you launched a few shells into the bottom layer.

What? Battle mode is possibly my favorite thing about Mario Kart!

So I should go with Mario Kart 7 in that case?

I'd say yes! Mario Kart 7's battle mode isn't the best, but it's leaps better than 8's. The biggest problem with 8 is that there aren't any Battle Mode-specific arenas, all of the matches are done on the actual race tracks, which has led to my friends and I driving around for several minutes sometimes without seeing one another.

As a whole, I believe Mario Kart 8 is better, but its battle mode is just awful.

Mario Kart's battle mode is mystifyingly terrible. Like they all got drunk on mescaline, a little too touchy feely and then decided to sacrifice a lemur instead of a goat.

It really makes that little sense. If anything - they should've excised it altogether and beefed up the core content, including the online content. Sure, people would've complained, but when a true battle mode rolled out, say by DLC that was actually robust (since, let's be honest, it was always a side game anyway) people would've been happy.

Instead what we got was a mode that no one likes. NO ONE.

Don't know what you're smoking, son. Battle Mode was the core of multiplayer on Mario Kart 64.
