Now, I'm pretty casual player. I've never played in a tournament of any kind and while I do watch tourny vids from time to time, I'm mostly just somewhat aware of the inner machinations of tournaments and no that wasn't my word of the day, I do actually know the word 'machinations'.

Anyway, I was thinking... team battles with anymore than 4 people total will probably suck. I don't know about the rest of you, but as a spectator, trying to keep track of a doubles match isn't the easiest thing to do. You're essentially watching two matches at the same time. Well, now imagine that with twice as many people. Imagine that with only 50% more people. Accidentally hitting your teammate isn't uncommon and raising the ratio of teammates to enemies from 1:2 to 2:3 or 3:4 is just going to make for a cluster **** of a match for the players as well as spectators. And turning off team attack would create worse problems than it would solve.

So what CAN we do?

IDEA 1 - Drafting

Anyone who's watched competitive DOTA and the like already know what I'm talking about, but in case you don't, I'm suggesting that, to make things fun and interesting for everyone involved, instead of players picking what characters they want to play, teams would alternate banning two characters each, then picking two and repeating to get a unique line up for both sides (each character only pick/bannable once). So something like:
Blue ban/Red ban/Bb/Rb/Red pick/Blue pick/Bp/Rp/Rb/Bb/Rb/Bb/Bp/Rp/Rp/Bp

Of course, this brings me to the first problem with this idea. Some type of official will need to be on hand to write down picks/bans. Shouldn't be too much of a problem considering that even if something like this catches on it would only be a niche thing most likely.

Oh yeah. There's a timer associated with drafting usually, so for those of you wondering who holds the stop watch, the solution to this problem is really simple: chess timer.
Might be worth giving the old college try if there's enough people in your area to even support it. As few as 8 teams would require 32 people if we're doing 4 man teams.

IDEA 2 - VIP (Very Important Puff)

Team focused gameplay in other games almost always have some sort of objective game type or another. Just because it's not an in game option, why should Smash be any different? In VIP, one person on each team would have to play as Jigglypuff and with infinite stocks, only Jigglypuff KOs would count. Maybe just do something simple like the first team to have Jiggly die loses.

That's all I've come up with so far. WIth custom specials at our disposal there might be even more interesting things you could try to put a fresh spin on Smash. You could even do Reverse Drafting (you pick who your OPPONENT plays).

Thoughts? Threats? Brownie recipes?

Don't take this one seriously. It's for fun.

Well, the 1v1v1v1v1v1v1v1 system could be a super fast way to play through pools!

Fair? What do you mean? Nair is better in these sorts of matches most the time.

I find the idea of 4v4 matches really exciting, actually. Its almost like some sort of war.
