Making better use of widescreen?

I know the majority of people use CRTs and play in 4:3 but I can't so I invested in upscalers and a lot of other nonsense so I play with under 1 frame of input lag on an LCD and something I noticed is that the widescreen mode does add more to the actual matches but the menus specifically the character select screen seem to be limited to using the 4:3 space. Is that something that can be changed?

I bought a widescreen CRT for exactly the same reason.
