I know there are MANY threads about picking a main, but I'm going to try and be as specific as possible.

Right now, I have been deciding to learn advanced melee, as I played A LOT of smash 4 with my goons and we got relatively good at it. While my understanding of the game is not perfect by any means, I feel that I understand the basics of smash to a degree.

This summer, as I'm off college and work part time, I'm trying to learn a character for melee. Only problem is, I'm having difficulty with my main. In sm4sh, I main Toon Link with some use from Ganon and Zard. Because of this, and my love for mid tiers, I tried young link but he is out of the question as I don't feel him (not as floaty as TL, fundamentally different in terms of movement and although I get confirms off his bomb, its too different for me to enjoy). The on thing I've noticed in melee is that I appreciate range on my normals, and so I have reached a conundrum.

Should I main Ganon, Icies, or Samus?

Ganondorf is the one I was playing in melee before I was off for the summer. and I absolutely adore him in Sm4sh, the game he's not viable in. I do well with him in Sm4sh, its just that my TL is a little more consistent. In melee, he's more viable and has better frame data where it counts (jab is twice as fast). Even though he's a big boy, I can play aggressive with him, and although I'm not as aggressive as most and play closer to balanced than most, I am definitely not a turtle player. This works well, and his uair is just as satisfying. My only concern is his movement, although below average in both games, just feels jerkier in melee. his wavedash and wavelands feel sticky, and I can't get a good feel for him when incorporating these into my play. My other concern, although not as important, is his decline. I am by no means going to be a world class player, but I wish to remain competitive, and he's dropped from 8th to 14th over the years. As a secondary in the distant future he'll be fine, but I am afraid of solo maining him for the time being, as I learn the game. For brownie points, I love the Zelda series, so there's that.

Ice Climbers are among the viable eight, and I love how they function. Their floatiness and small disjoints are reminiscent of Toon Link, and I don't mind their high skill ceiling, as that's why I want to switch to melee. The reason I chose them as my main on my profile is because I've been practicing with them recently and feel if i were challenged right now they would be my best bet. They seem to have something for every situation without feeling generic, and their under representation among the tournament scene makes them seem even better (I can be a hipster with who I main). Their wavelands and wavedashes are obviously fantastic, and they feel so fluid with their combos at times. I shield A LOT in smash 4 (my worst habit) and the icies fantastic OoS game is enticing. Playing Sopo at times is fine too, as I enjoy playing lowtiers sometimes, and this character has both. The only downsides are that they are kind of light, as I love playing the hefty characters (even though TL is middleweight), and they have a lackluster recovery, something that I tend to value in a character (non existent concern in Sm4sh, everyone's livin' in that game). Overall the pick that I lean slightly towards, but I'm still not sure, especially considering I live in the middle of nowhere and will get little match experience until I head back to uni.

Samus is also on my list. While she doesn't feel as natural as the other characters, she's still enough to keep her in my considerations. She has a very versatile projectile game, something I value as a TL main, and her normals on the ground are very solid. While she's not an aggressive character, I can play a slower game with her just fine. That weight is fantastic, and I love her flexible recovery and her wall jumps (situational I know, but I love wall jumps in this game). At tenth place in the tier list, she seems viable enough, and she's the only one among these three whoi has a decent matchup against space animals, something that is good to have in a character. My only concerns with Samus is her air game as well as the fact that she does play patient, something that I can do more so than others, but something that may be problematic.

Overall, I'm having a tough time making a decision, but this is who I have it narrowed down to.

Also, given what I've mentioned, if there's a character I should try, let me know. Although I've been ******* around with most of the top to mid tiers, I've only entirely cast out Peach (least natural to me by far), Pikachu (no range on normals), and the plumbers (no range on normals).

Go ic because they are better for advanced. Try condering your prefered playstyle and pick the character that matches that style

I did not google for a thread like this, as I was looking for input that was specific to my feelings on each character. After further testing, I feel that Samus is too unnatural for me to consider her, and Ganon does feel like he's at a disadvantage compared to ICs, so I think I'll stick with ICs; and maybe in the future add Ganon as a secondary. If anyone feels there is a character I should try, please let me know.
