Looks like it, the picture with his arms to his side looks like Ness's recovery when he gets hit my the ball thing. Also, the blue ball Lucas has in front of him looks like Ness's Down-B

Actually, I grew up with Ness, not Lucas...

Nope. Ness is unlocked once you complete Lucas's Subspace Emissary storyline. After they both face off.

Although the mention of Ness seems to allude to Ness' removal...it would also be odd for them to mention Ness in such a spiteful way. Ness is cooler.

I doubt Ness still has a chance. Unless we see a Ness update in the same week. If Ness were to be in I would of updated Ness first before Lucas.
I don't know much about Earth or Mother series or whatever it's called, I just followed the flavour and selected Lucas like everyone else.
Of course there is a chance this franchise has stepped up and has got 2 reps now. It's been in ever since the beginning.

Why would they both face off? Ness is Lucas's great great great grandfather. Mother 3 is pretty far in the future.Nope. Ness is unlocked once you complete Lucas's Subspace Emissary storyline. After they both face off.

I really do think that Lucas has replaced Ness. Lucas is from the most popular and best selling MOTHER game, and was mentioned on the poll. Sakurai also mention'd that if MOTHER 3 came out for the N64 he would replace Ness with Lucas; and now look what happend. I think Ness/Ninten will be alt costumes of Lucas.

They are much too similar. One wears a hat. And one doesn't use baseball bats. Perhaps if they were alt costumes...but never say never I guess.
