Yea, I went there. First things first, so I can get this out of the way. I am only backing Lu Bu because noone to this day has supported him in the slightest, and I am making it my goal to scrounge up character ideas that, although possible, are not very likely...
So in the off chance that if one of these poorly supported characters make the cut, it will show that someone out there did back them. That, and we are really hurting for original character suggestions.
So with that foreword, (and the fact that I admit now, that this is just to throw the suggestion out there, and that I am well aware of the "chances,") Let's get this support thread a going!
Lu Bu is pwnage incarnate. If Captain Falcon and Chuck Norris were to get together for 5 seconds to let their awesome aura comingle to form a being, it would be Lu Bu.
This guy is sort of the flagship character for the Dynasty Warriors series, as he is a reoccuring "boss" if you will, as well as a playable character. He is basically the "face" of Dynasty Warriors, as the face of Zelda is Link. He plays an important role as being that one badass bodyguard noone dares screw with because he rules that hard. It's a fact, that to every soldier Lu Bu slays, a person blinks. So basically, while you are blinking up a storm, Lu Bu is unleashing pwnage.
Joking aside for the moment, he has been in every single Dynasty Warriors game, making him far more important to rep the series as opposed to the other 70+ warriors. This is interesting, because Lu Bu is not a good guy, nor is he a bad guy. Think Metaknight's stand on things, except instead of being Kirby's rival, the world is Lu Bu's rival. He has his own independence from the storylines as a whole, because, as I have said before, he is just that badass everyone fears.
This makes him very unique to the Smash brothers mix, as he is basically the self-proclaimed main character. How about them apples?

How does a character like Lu Bu have any relevance or upstanding in regards to the overall look of things?
You'd be surprised actually. It isn't like Koei fell off the face of the Earth or anything. They are a bit late to assisting Nintendo in terms of suppling titles, but that is only because Koei hates to try anything "new." The bulk of the franchise is PS2, with the newer titles expanding to XBOX360/PS3.
They have, in the past, helped out Nintendo. Nintendo fans did get one of their first titles from Koei in the form of a gamecube title called "Mystic Heroes." In terms of more recent contributions, there was Dynasty Warriors for the DS, as well as two upcoming wii titles.
