Lots of questions

1. I want to try and master every character in ssb64, I already have Samus mastered(she is my main for life), I'm getting good with luigi and mario. In what order should I learn the different characters? I'm somewhat new to competetive ssb64, someone once suggest I start with Jiggs because she is good to learn how to combo. Your thoughts?

2. Short hopping, I rather suck at it, I'm using my space bar as the C up button for short hopping, but I just can't seem to do it that well. Is there a better key that I should assign for the C up button?

3. SHFFLing attacks, you can do that in ssb64 right? I mean you can short-hop then fast fall than L cancel, or is the physics of SSB64 not so conducive to shffling as melee?

4. What are some good combo's for Luigi/Mario?

5. I really want to be good with luigi/mario so could you give me some tips please? Thank you all.

You do not have to answer all the questions, if you only know the answer to one than just say that one.

Thank you:bee:

1. Kirby and Falcon are pretty easy to learn, Ness and Yoshi are probably the hardest. Other than that, though, I don't think there's any particular order.

2. I would recommend that you get a controller, it makes it much easier to shorthop.

3. I don't believe you can SHFFL aerials like in melee.

4. With Luigi: uairs > upB or uairs > downB. You can use his dair and fair as well (shorthop fair > uair, or shorthop dair > uair > dair uair against taller characters or on an incline). With Mario, uairs > fair or nair, and if you can swing it, uairs > usmash.

5. With Mario, learn how to do two aerials in one shorthop. Shorthop dair > uair and shorthop uair > uair are particularly useful. When you're starting a uair juggle with Luigi or Mario, shorthop your uairs. If you fulljump (especially with Luigi), you may go higher than you hit your opponent, making it much more difficult to continue juggling. Also, if you don't already know, you can use Mario's and Luigi's downB for recovery. Just repeatedly hit the B button really fast while they're spinning around. If you do it fast enough, you'll gain a fair amount of altitude.

One more thing with Mario: you can use his downB as a spike. If you hit your opponent with the last hit of Mario's downB, and Mario's feet are about level with your opponent's neck/head, your opponent will get spiked. I wouldn't recommend using this too often, as it isn't nearly as consistently successful as the other spikes in the game.

you can shffl.... or shffz. just not exactly practical.

with SHing. dont use spacebar. its the largest key on your keybaord meaning it is the most difficult one to tap delicately. you should consider changing the cbutton to a small key (letter/number) which you control with your index or middle finger. but if you keep practicing SHing with spacebar will eventually come naturally.

i would advice you start with luigi before mario because luigi is floatier therefore he's "slower" and you can control him better. you should master dair->uair with one SH. also use plenty of usmash to counter approaches.
once you're fluent with him move to mario who is the better of the 2.
once you are fluent with luigi basics you should move to mario, who is considered better of the 2.

Both good advice, I forgot to add that I played kirby for a long time when I started online ssb64 smashing. I do have a controller, its basically a generic playstation clone controller but it has a really stupid control pad. What about this combo for luigi:

D Air > U Air > SH > D Air > Uair > SH repeat until about 70-80? > U air > U air > Down B/Up B.

Why exactly is mario higher tier than luigi? I understand that Mario is way better for combos and his up b is better for recovery, is there any other reasons?

Thanks for the advice guys!

PS: RPG Maker VX is t3h ownage...just to let you know.

That might work against DK, since he is the biggest character. The problem is that Luigi's shorthop is just too high, so DK is the only character he can combo even semi-effectively with dair > uair. You can get some damage on your opponent with dair > zcancel > usmash and just using your aerials, then start a juggle with shorthop > uair > uair. Against some characters you can start a uair juggle off of usmash at low %.

Mario is mostly better than Luigi because
1. Mario has a better shorthop, making him much better at comboing, and
2. Mario's fireball is much better than Luigi's, particularly for edgeguarding.

This is mostly true, my biggest advice to give would be remember with Dair--Uair combos, dont use Dair at the peak of your jump, use it while jumping, or you may not have enough time to get that Uair in,

P.S. Buy a controller

I do have a controller, an amazingly crappy controller invented by mentally deficient people over at some mental asylum. I can't short-hop with it, the D-Pad is crap and everything else about it basically sucks. AND IT WASTED 20$! I do have a microsoft controller that might work better, but my computer only has new usb ports, that controller needs those big old ones you screw on.

So should I even bother trying to do luigi? I saw some Isai videos and he looked like he shorthops pretty good. Mind you Isai owns with every character. I'm getting way better at shorthopping with my space bar, with practice I should be able to do it just as easy as teching.

I've been playing all morning with both luigi and mario on emularena, I can see the difference between the two. Mario's combos flow so nicely and he almost seems faster, but I am proficient with both luigi and mario now.

Personally if you're using spacebar for jump i'd entirely change your setup now. Lol.

I reccomend asdw for movement if you're not already

A for Down arrow key
B on left arrow
C on right arrow
Z on up
R on right ctrl

why dont you buy an adaptoid on ebay? then you can use an n64 controller when you play smash 64 online.
