Hey, guys! I've been following the competitive Melee scene for a couple of years now (like many, I was introduced to it through the documentary). I've played on-and-off, but never really committed to it. Starting today, I'm now taking it seriously and genuinely trying to get good. I practiced for about 4-5 hours today, but had to stop because my fingers were getting too sore. Lol.

Here's a little compilation of some of the highlights from my session, to show you guys where I'm at/what I'm currently capable of. I'm looking for some advice from any skilled players out there (regarding Fox, specifically, as he's my solo-main). Tips on punishes, tech-skill I should prioritize, any noticeable flaws in my game, etc. Anything would be greatly appreciated!

The video's pretty short, so I apologize if it's not really sufficient enough to get a good grasp on my skill, but still, any advanced advice that you guys have to offer is fine, even if it doesn't necessarily pertain to me specifically.

It seems like you've learned a lot of the basics and have a good mind for learning punish game and edgeguarding. Practice will make your movement and your punishes smoother.

I suggest you practice against real people or the 20xx bots though, because the training mode Fox doesn't DI and always does the same recovery which won't expose you to the wide range of options your opponent has

Im also a beginner but my personal tip is practice your movement. Fox is so fast and all his mixups come from his Awesome mobility, try wavelands on platforms and dash dance across the stage with different links, and you should never stand still after an atack or a neutral reset.
Yes this sound so basic and stupid but acctualy its very hard to really improve at, you'll need tons of hours to really see an improvement. but trust me, nothing its more satisfying that see your own Fox moving faster and doing things that you thought were impossible to you :)

Also try to play to someone many times as you can because on paper, fox's tech skill isnt hard if you practice like 2 hours every day, the difficulty comes when you have to apply what you've learned on a real match

Yeah, I've noticed some bad habits that I've developed, due to constantly practicing against training mode CPUs. Like, when I'm versing one of my friends (a fellow Fox main), I'll sometimes not react to/predict a side-B recovery, because the training mode Fox never uses it, so I've been somewhat conditioned to not even consider it. It'll be an easy fix, though, and I know that I can certainly get over that.

That's actually something that I'm definitely trying to improve on - not standing still so much! I'll sometimes "freeze up," due to being unsure of how to proceed/what to follow through with. Like, I have all of the tools, and I can consistently perform most of Fox's bread-and-butter tech, but I'll sometimes draw a blank. I think that will naturally go away, though, as long as I keep consistently playing.

As an aside, another issue I'm having is with my controller, actually. I have the black Sm4sh controller, and I hate it. Lol. It's way too stiff (the sticks, triggers, buttons, etc.). I need a looser controller. An older model, I think.
