Looking for Advice on Running Tournaments

If this belongs in another thread, I apologize. I don't use this site very often.

I don't have very many people in my play group, and there aren't very many tournaments in my area. I've been thinking about potentially running my own tournament to help fix this, but I'm not sure if it would actually work or not. Since there aren't many near me to begin with I imagine that the scene in my general area isn't very large. I'm worried that I'll put forth the investment to start running a tournament but not have anyone actually show up. Is there a way I can see if enough people in the general vicinity are interested before I actually make the commitment, or is that a risk I need to be willing to take?

Also, any general tips on running a successful tournament are greatly appreciated. I've never tried doing anything like this before, so avoiding any potential mistakes would be incredibly helpful.

A side note, this would probably end up being a weekly/bi weekly/monthly type thing if I went through with it.

Get a good amount of setups. The worst thing that can happen is nobody can play. I think usually a good ratio is 3/4 people per setup so it's up to you.

Streams also attract people but are not necessary (If you need help with that just respond)

Try to get a free venue. This helps especially if no one shows up (let's just hope people do)

Make a good bracket. Use Challonge.com for a good bracket maker

Also, I would ask around on Facebook and your local scene group. They can help more than I can.

What would be the ideal amount of setups for a 12 man tournament?

The biggest issue I can foresee is setups. I know of 3 potential setups, between myself and the people that would be helping me run the tournament. Is there a "best way" to get a surplus of setups, or would I just have to invest in a bunch of systems / copies of melee / CRT's?
