Looking for a Main

I've played Smash Wii U for awhile now. In that time, I've tried every character, looking for a main.

Despite what others have said, however, I couldn't seem to find a character that "clicked" with me. I found this to be a bit frustrating, so I decided to post my understanding of my own playstyle and interest in order to see what others think might be a good character for me.

Playstyle
  • Terrible with Execution: When it comes to complicated input strings and muscle memory, I fail almost every time. I constantly misinput when strings get longer than 3 or 4 basic moves. I also often find myself facing the wrong direction and I'm only able to perfect pivot correctly about 50% of the time.
For this reason, I've ruled out characters like Ryu completely.
  • Bait and Punish: I like noticing my opponent's habits and preferences. Many of my successful hits have come from reads.
Although, I don't think I do this actively. Instead, I'm more of a reaction-based player; unconsciously adapting.
I've enjoyed characters like Falco and Falcon in the past.

  • Aggressive: I enjoy constantly bombarding my opponent with attacks. I like never giving my opponent a chance to retaliate against me.
I've enjoyed characters like Roy and Pikachu before.

Interest
If it comes down to it, I am willing to play any of the characters. However, in terms of preferences, I enjoy some of the more well-known characters.

Characters like Wii Fit and Duck Hunt don't really appeal to me, while characters like Link and Kirby are able to catch my attention.

I also don't like characters that have a sort of "cheap" feeling. Ness is a character that I can win with, but I don't like him because of the lack of effort and critical thinking I need to put in. (Sorry if you're a Ness main and I insulted you.)

That's all I can think of currently. Sorry if it's a little confusing; I'm confused by my own preferences sometimes as well. But if you have any ideas for characters I could try maining, please feel free to leave a reply. Thanks in advance.

Hello,

I have two mains so I can't really say too much but I'll try my best! I have a few suggestions...

From what you're saying, maybe a kind of head-on character that can fight an opponent directly. Sword characters like Roy are good too, they can sometimes leave your opponent unable to move around, their hit boxes are usually pretty good too (Ike is a good example of this). If sword characters aren't your thing, try a projectile-based character like Mega Man, he can fight directly and shoot projectiles from a distance. I know it's a weird choice but Bayonetta is great for putting pressure on your opponent and leaving them unable to fight back. She also has a lot of basic strings so it's easy to combo with her. Kirby and Pikachu are very well-known characters and are pretty fun to play. Kirby is very easy to learn and can do a lot of damage with some really speedy combos. Pikachu can be a very annoying character to play against, which is a good thing because it puts pressure on the opponent, he has great combo potential.

I main Dedede, he is a heavyweight character that can fight head-on and also has a projectile that is directional (called a Gordo). Dedede is slow, so I have to focus a lot of defense and try to strike from behind. I also main Wario, he can fight directly but he also has a motorbike that he can even eat to restore 1 percent, so that's cool. Wario can also eat projectiles from characters like Mega Man. I main these characters because I love Kirby games and Wario games, they have been with me for a very long time.

I hope that helped!

Thanks for the in-depth suggestions! I'll definitely keep this in consideration.

You can try Shulk. I think he can work well with bait and punish. And when you get the advantage or are in Monado Speed, Buster, or any art that you like you can play really agressive if you want. Also with the arts you can adapt to many situations if you play right.

I'll give him a shot. Thanks for the suggestion.

Well sir, it sounds like you could benefit from my profile picture. Seriously, play Meta Knight. He's the gimp master, he still has good attacks and combo strings that aren't ridiculously hard to pull off, and he doesn't require much perfect pivoting (most of his combos come out of his dash attack.) He has awesome recovery, good killing options, and can be played in an aggressive manner while still pressuring and looking for mistakes.

I main Cloud though. Cloud is good for everyone.
