Hello all! I've known about this site for a while, but haven't ever registered or posted. With the new game around the corner, though, and my excitement through the roof, I decided it was time to join.
Super Smash Bros. Melee was the first console Nintendo game I ever played, all the way back in 2002 when I was only 5 or 6 years old. I played it at a cousin's house, and despite not really knowing who any of the characters were, I fell in love with it, and it was my gateway to Nintendo. Soon after I'd get my own Gamecube with Super Mario Sunshine, Metroid Prime, Melee, and eventually Chibi-Robo and Wind Waker, among many other games and franchises that would become some of my all-time favorites. I don't play Melee very often anymore, but since it will always hold a special place in my heart for introducing me to not just the series, but Nintendo as a whole.
When Brawl was announced, I followed its release super closely, picking it up on launch, and I loved it even more than Melee. It will always be one of my all-time favorite Nintendo games, and I was shocked to learn years later that many people hate it. I'll never not love all the new stages, characters, and features that game has, especially Subspace Emissary. My friends and family played it constantly, not caring at all about the issues everyone else seems to have with it. It was incredible fun, and it introduced R.O.B. onto the scene, and he's been my main ever since, alongside Toon Link, whom I played because of the Four Swords Adventure manga. Many years later, when I got into Metal Gear, I finally appreciated Snake, and started playing him, too.
Smash 4 didn't get my hype up as much as Brawl did. By then, my gaming horizons had expanded far beyond Nintendo to many other franchises, and I hadn't been interested in anything Nintendo did since Brawl. I was excited at Mega Man's inclusion, but none of the other newcomers were too exciting. I was more concerned about if R.O.B. was going to get cut, given his low popularity. The month after it came out on Wii U, my family picked it up and a system to play it on, and thankfully R.O.B. was still there. My siblings and I, much older than when Melee and Brawl were new, still play Smash 4 all the time, especially since one of my brothers loves Little Mac so much. We've come a long ways since we were young, now getting much more competitive and technical with our characters, studying even some of the pros to get a leg up on each other, though not too intensely as to make it overly competitive. It was in this game that I picked up Dedede as a secondary main, and Samus as my third, along with Mega Man and Jigglypuff. I'd play Mewtwo if he wasn't my other brother's main.
The announcement for Smash 5 caught us all by surprise. My expectation was that it would be, like many people theorized, Smash 4.5, and my hope was that all the forgotten characters from Melee and Brawl would be brought back, since Smash 4 was so close to having the full roster, that the lack of Snake, Pokemon Trainer, Ice Climbers, Young Link, Pichu, and Wolf were just teasing. Also, if they could balance the roster better, since most of my favorite characters are "lower tier," which disincentivized me from trying to be competitive.
So when the Direct aired, and I see all the Smash 4 guest characters, followed by Snake appearing, and being told "EVERYONE IS HERE!", along with that they were rebalancing and retooling everyone, I realized I had gotten exactly what I wanted. And not only that, but they were bringing back a bunch of old stages, as well as completely overhauling the gameplay to make it faster and better. This was the game to succeed Smash 4 and pick up where it left off to form the ultimate Smash game. I even love the main theme way better than Smash 4, though it's hard to top Brawl's.
But then they reveal RIDLEY. Metroid is one of my all-time favorite franchises, and I've been dying for a new character since Brawl. I've desperately wanted Dark Samus (and there's still hope she's at least an Echo Fighter!), but Ridley is secondary. After denying that it could or should be done for a decade, Sakurai finally changed his mind. On top of that, Ridley's representation is absolutely perfect. He looks better than he's ever looked before, his animations and moves are amazing, and he's just the right size. I may even make him my main, depending on how much I like him, though he'll probably just be a close second to R.O.B. I've completely forgiven Sakurai for all the Fire Emblem characters and the lack of Subspace Emissary in Smash 4, because everything he's done for this game has been nothing but good.
My pipe dream is that Chibi-Robo is announced, but I don't think that'll happen, since this Smash seems to be about fulfilling long-time popular requests, and I got Ridley, so I'm satisfied.
I haven't been this excited for Smash in over 10 years. I'm 21 years old now and I feel like I'm 11 again. Thankfully, we don't have to wait as long as for previous games. Only 6 months! I need somewhere to vent the excitement, and it seems this is the best place to do it. I'm ready to take Smash more seriously than I ever have before, and may even try to get competitive, who knows.
...sorry for the longass post. I tend to do that sometimes. Anyways, I look forward to the discussions to come for the next 6 months and beyond as we eagerly await the ultimate Smash game!
