Ledgehop fair is used because its hitbox has the longest range outside of the zair, it's rather quick to come out, and it has multiple hits which makes it tricky for people not used to its duration to shieldgrab/oos up b/dodge. With proper DI on a poorly spaced opponent, you can fair past them and it will stun them long enough for you to be able to fsmash them in the back.

The problem I can see with using dair from the ledge is that its hitbox is predominately below her until the end frames of the move, so most of the frames of your approach wouldn't be able to hit your opponent.

With that said, I think better options are zair, fair, uair, nair and missile.. Hope that helps.

Multi-hit ledgehop aerials are by far the best possible option because when timed/spaced properly, they can easily penetrate a shielded foe and combo, if necessary, by fastfalling at the correct time. Zair is just awesome for it's obscene range. As a mix-up, maybe. A well placed dair may be able to push a shielded foe away far enough to avoid being grabbed. Samus' slow fall speed may not guarantee you this result, though. Stick with what works. If it works for you, by all means do it.

By the way, when Samus finishes her dair, her arm cannon finishes its swing slightly above 180 degrees. Using this, you might be able to hit someone without having to go above the stage. I think you might have to face the opposite way though....
