I'm curious which characters could get by without wavedashing, and tech stuff in general?

I hate to sound like a ****, but there really aren't any. Not in my opinion anyway, but the closest in my opinion is Meta Knight. Just because he's that fast, his attacks just don't combo together as much as they used to.

Characters with a bad wavedash like Peach or Zelda dont really "need" to wavedash i guess. And also peach could just float cancel all of her moves so she wouldn't need to l-cancel. But tbh, like Brim said, there really arent any once you get to the highest level of play. Top players will use and abuse every tech they can to get the advantage.

What about Link or Ike? How useful would wavedashing be?

About average I guess. Wavedashing out of sheild is almost a must for all characters. But also know that wavedashing and l-cancelling isnt all of the tech skill you should learn. Every character has specific tech with their movement and combos and such which imo is way harder than wavedashing. Link has lots of Bomb tricks and Ike has a lot of quickdraw jump cancels. Its definitely not the hardest of the hard tech but its still something.

youre looking at this wrong.

Pick a character you like.
Get used to them.
if the people you're playing with are beating you and you need more, then start learning advanced techs.

if theyre not, well, you just keep playing your character. and start learning them when you feel like it.

What narpas said above me.

However, with that in mind, link is probably the one you are looking for. Superfloaties like jiggs, kirby, and peach work as well. Keep in mind that you can only go so far without learning ATs so might as well just pick a character you like and stick with them. ATs will come with time.

wd oos isn't a big deal when you're ganon or bowser... :S

I would say "it's a must for almost all characters" rather than "almost a must etc." :p

Even if you don't wavedash though, wave landing can still be amazing in the moment for *almost* any character.

But yeah, play the game, and by extension, your main, to have fun. Advanced techniques will develop if you play the game enough with certain people; otherwise, there's nothing to worry about.

Spin Dash and Withdraw throw fundementals out the window. You should probably still dash dance though, even with Peach.

A guy I played with at weeklies said that he preferred Wario for the low tech ceiling, he was doing rather well with the character without using footstools or L-cancelling everything. Maybe try him out.

Don't play squirtle though.

bowser doesnt really have super hard tech and imo is probably the easiest to use.

Bowser is easy when you are playing against someone bad and you are bad, but at a high level, bowser requires a lot of patience and intelligence to play right. He has a hard time dealing with rushdown and projectile spam which the metagame is full of atm. Because of this, he has a very hard time playing against anybody good and requires a lot of forethought and mindgames to use effectively. He is essentially forced to play the other player's game in half of his matchups. Saying he is easy with this in mind is silly. Maybe against a computer he is easy, but not against another human being. He is probably the most polarized character between human and CPU in this way.

Wavedashing is nothing more than a positioning tool. If your positioning is godlike, you don't need it.

To answer the question though, low tech ceiling characters (compared to others) include Link, Sheik, Peach, Bowser, D3, Jigglypuff, Ike. These are all characters that can get by really far up the player ladder with just good spacing and positioning basically without any really difficult tech at all. Like... Ike is probably the most tech heavy out of all those and the most you might need is just being able to jump and walljump out of sideB, which is really easy. I also have a friend that plays an entirely wavedash-less Falco and I have to admit he's insanely good at what he does.
