Late December too late to get this game?

I've never been a been fighting game guy and Smash 3DS was my first Smash game. However, my new chocolate lab puppy has chewed up my 3DS.

I want Smash for Wii U so desperately but will have to buy the console as well. Additionally, my semester is quickly winding down to a close and I don't want to be too distracted.

If I get this game in late December, around 3 weeks from now, will I have any hope of being competitive? I have no plans to go pro or any of that, I'd just like to be able hold my own and go and mess around at tourneys. I used to do that back in the Halo 2 days.

Will I already be too far behind starting a month late? Have any of you jumped late into a game like this and had fun/success?

It really doesn't matter. Whenever you get it, there'll always be SOMEONE ready and waiting to kick your butt, and there'll be people you can beat. It'll take time to get up to your full potential, but whether you start practising now or later really won't make a difference, because the end result's the same.

The metagame is always developing as people enter and leave it. Many years ago Ken was the King of Smash. Now, that title would probably go to Mew2King. It's only been just recently that Amsa came in and wrecked shop with Yoshi of all characters.

What I'm meaning to say is: you're anything but late. A one month advantage is only a one month advantage at best. There are many people who join and leave the metagame so you'll be anything but late. Go for it! Buy the game and have fun, isn't that what it's intended to be for?

Also, Wii U > 3DS, you should buy it just for that reason.

Expect tons of newbies to pick the game up on Christmas. Also there will always be both good and bad players. In fact expect MORE opportunities to play people by 2015.

It's never to late to buy Smash.
Please ignore some of the NA people who are crying that Smash 4 WiiU is already boring or that not having the game first equals cancer. They are just being elitist and arrogant. The facts is, even if you get the game 31/12/14 you will have lots of people to vs online in 2015 and past that, all the great single player and local multiplayer content will not go away. It will be just as amazing for you as it is for everyone else.

You will be competitive after a little practice no matter when you get the game. Just don not worry about your win %. Just worry about getting better over time and you will have lots of fun.

And remember this.
The Australians and Europeans can't even buy the game yet. The will be able to tomorrow.
The J.aps will not be able to buy the game till next week.
So your worry about getting the game a little past the release dates does not matter at all.
