I did some testing just in case anyone wanted some number data instead of word of mouth of how the LAN Adapter is compared to Wireless on Wii U. I posted my PC's speed as well to show what the actual speed of my net usually is by comparison to the Wii U to showcase the Wii U's limits.

The LAN Adapter I utilized is the Plugable USB 2.0 to 10/100 and the website utilized for speedtesting on Wii U and my PC is testmy.net. The wireless router I have is also in the same room as my Wii U, only 2-3 feet away from it.

Wii U seems to have a cap at download speed so the download speed is similar, but a little bit higher on average than wireless. Upload on the Lan Adapter has a considerable boost over wireless.

It's really up to you what you decide to use, although, you do get a nice little boost in upload via LAN.

Interesting data. I'm interested if the download speed is cut as much on a slower connection, or if it is indeed a cap. Also while these give some sort of idea as to how the performance compares, ping comparisons would be much more useful as it's more important for online play.

??? The adapter posted was like 11 dollars. And the purpose of the thread is to show the differences between wired and wireless speed anyways. This helps with people who has connection issues in general or just wants very solid netplay. Hardcore gaming has nothing to do with this.

Wired is especially helpful for those that has their connection affected by the distance of the router. For example: Someone has a router in another room which is many feet away, the wireless connection would likely take a big hit on its speed (which can cause serious lag). This doesn't apply to all routers, but it is pretty common.

The whole difference is in ping and stability. It's not 'up to you' - ethernet is always better for online gaming as it is stable and there is no flux.

I don't think the OP claimed otherwise. I think what the OP meant by "up to you" if you want to spend more to get a boost in speed.

However, I have a hypothetical question. If someone just happens to use a lengthy Ethernet cord and the download/upload speed manages to be lower than wireless in those speed tests, would it still be better than wireless gaming? Need a bit of a clear up here.

Ah, didn't know about that. There are plenty of Ethernet adapters compatible with Wii U, so there might be some cheap ones in the AU market.

Ah, didn't know about that. There are plenty of Ethernet adapters compatible with Wii U, so there might be some cheap ones in the AU market.

Right I understand, but online gaming connections aren't about speed. There's more to internet connections than raw speed numbers, and this thread is not helpful by being limited to that.

Throughput means little here. Latency and packet loss are the concern. A latency test may be useful, but unless your wifi is borderline unusable, ping times to your router should be 1ms. The Ethernet adapter is only useful for those with extremely poor routers.

It's up to you what you decide to use. Not everyone has access to ethernet or even wants to use ethernet. So, yes. It is up to that person what they want to do with their own internet. I had already mentioned in the post that ethernet has an obvious advantage, that's still not going to stop someone from using wireless when it's generally more convenient.

But there still isn't much of a point in comparing any of these results.
