Lagging on a match on purpose?

I've always noticed that whenever I'm up against a player that plays as a fast character , like Sonic, the Match seems to lag, but if I go into another match, my connection is perfectly fine. This also happens when a player that I'm fighting isn't very good. I've come to the conclusion that players purposely lag their consoles in order to win. This may just be me being a insane noob, but, if this has happened to you, let me know. This may be a serious problem among the online community that we need to fix.

while I find this scenario highly unlikely there have been a few suspicious instances. for example I was playing against this peach and was smashing her badly. she was on roughly 70% while I was only on 8%. suddenly it lags the crap out of me. I procced to lose. while this is probably coincidence it should be checked out just to be cautious. or I am going crazy and paranoid.

It probably is paranoia, but I've also noticed this sort of thing. It's generally Little Mac's. I tend to leave after this occurs, win or lose. There was a time I fought a Villager and I was doing pretty good, then this lag suddenly came out of nowhere and I ended up losing because I couldn't recover correctly. Dude left afterwards.

Don't you love it when people have to resort to lag switching in order to keep there record high, anyways it's probably just me but whenever I come across a :4zss:,:4rob:,or a:4villager:,I can always expect bad lag to occur whenever I'm winning or there flowchart nonsense don't work.

I've definitely been suspicious about lag switching (doesn't help that a lot of my laggy matches involve characters like :4link:, :4samus:, etc.) but of course it could always just be a really terrible connection. If it seems really obvious, you can just report them.

I've wondered if that happens. Occasionally when I'm winning the match starts lagging badly. It doesn't happen often, but it does happen consistently enough to make me wonder.

I get input lag most of the time when I fight certain characters like Sanic.
There's no way of knowing if the lagging was intentional when playing against poorly skilled players.

It's honestly hard to tell, if you get lag at first sight of when the match starts you can tell one of you guy has a poor connection right now.

If you lag out of nowhere, there is the possibility the other opponent is lag switching which is really much of a coward thing to do but I find it rare.

Though there are times when I think the situation arises where I actually thought my opponent was lag switching but from now I can't really tell.

Is this for real? How can one lag a match on purpose? What, you jiggle the ethernet cord or kick the router or something? I didn't think it was possible.

If you're on 3ds, all you have to do is move far enough away from the hotspot, the same thing goes with Wii U.

Lag doesn't benefit either player, he'd be lagging as well. Unless you're implying that he's going to your house and screwing up your connection. Either way you're just being paranoid. Smash also has a hidden matchmaking system. So players with lower latency are usually paired together. There's also the fact that worse (more casual) players probably aren't running lan adapters or anything like that because they aren't that serous about smash.

This all sounds paranoid and insane. No one playing smash brothers is intentionally lagging their consoles to win except for all those punks who beat me. They're obviously cheating.

You act like there are people who DON'T want to win, no matter what.

There are plenty of people who don't want to win no matter what.

There are significantly less people who don't want to win. Smashocism aside, it's probably zero here.

But I still think lagging a console would be a dumb way to go about cheating. Total double edged sword as your opponent faces the same bonuses and disadvantages you do in lag.

Except for the times I lose in lag, then it was intentional and the guy did it just to make me lose. That jerk.

You think it's dumb, but it's been a thing in fighting games for years. I'm not saying that lag is intentional all the time, that's silly. But people will really do this stuff, they don't care if they get affected.

I personally sit in my kitchen and kick the microwave on anytime I'm down a stock. Works like a charm

So is there host advantage? Typically fighting games are P2P. Probably a pretty simple matter to determine if you're host or not. If you're, host: bust out the lag switches. (These are easy to make. Saw the video online, i could make one in 2 minutes.
