From my understanding, it happens because your opponent lost their internet connection or purposely disconnected. I believe you get a point when you win. I'm not entirely sure what happens on their end, I think they either get a disconnect error or they fight a cpu and get a win.

I've noticed this a few times too. I've figured out that it happens whenever they disconnect in such a way that wasn't designed into the game (IE: They shut the power off or closed the DS and turned the wireless switch off). It seems to just be a default behavior for connection loss.
