L-canceling different timings/pillaring problems

So I haven't found anything on the internet about this but I have heard it somewhere and I have been practicing with multiple characters. For some reason it seems harder to use Falco in this case. (Which I main).
I have just been practicing against a playerless Bowser and just trying to SHFFL with varying aerials. I can SHFFL without a target easily cause I can shine immediately after I land but on the Bowser I can't seem to get the timing down for all aerials (specifically Bair) other than Dair. I just can't seem to L-cancel when actually hitting a character.

Does anyone have any tips on this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I struggle with this also.

If you're anything like me, you're memorizing the timing of the L cancel. You can't make it automatic. When you hit a character (or a shield), the timing changes because you don't hit the ground as fast.

Adjust your L cancel. Delay it when you hit a character or a shield. Watch for when falco is about to hit the ground.

Best of luck, I hope I was helpful

The huge problem with just practicing against just one character is the muscle memory you develop. If you make a conscious effort to practice L-Cancelling right before you hit the the ground, instead of basing it on just timing, it should just start coming naturally.

Some people recommend practicing against 3 lvl 1 ICs. I've always found it difficult to tell when I actually get the L-Cancel, but if you can get the shine out immediately when you hit the ground, you've got it. Personally, I'd also recommend starting the aerials from different heights while practicing. I used to always miss an L-cancel from a full hop aerial while still having a consistent SHFFL

Hitting a character changes when you can fastfall, and thus changes the timing between your inputs.

It's a different timing for hitting nothing, hitting a character, hitting a shield, etc.

This is a simple problem that will be soon forgotten with a bit of practice. You have to understand what is going on: When you hit someone, or their shield, both of you are essentially frozen for about 2-3 frames. That means, you are going to land later, and you're going to have to wait just a bit longer before pressing L to L cancel. Read about hitstun/hitlag. You should be able to adjust your timings, practice practice practice.
