It's most noticable if you're playing all-star mode, during the transition screens. If you do an aerial into the portal, and you l-cancel it, you'll be semi-standing as the next match starts. If you don't l-cancel, you'll be crouching as the next match starts. It's easiest to start off practicing with characters that are the most noticable, namely Bowser or either link's Dair, but you should always practice with your main(s) too, so you can get used to it.

I'm not sure about this, but I think l-canceling is like teching: you have to press L/R/z within 20 frames (1/3 second), or you take 40 frames of down time, where you can't l-cancel.

Thanks for the reply i have been training the L-cancel with fox in training mode where you dair them then L-cancel a shine and if you have L-cancel'd it shows as consecutive hits and if you haven't it won't... but this isn't the case for falco and i know there is a different timing needed for fox and falco.

Whether a the dair of Link is L-canceled can also be well seen...
I can just say, Shorthop L-Cancel is harder than Shorthop, Fastfall Lcancel, because with Fastfall you can bring your char onto the ground, so you can have a better timing...

i know my english sucks but doesn't matter

That's the timing for teching, acualy. L-canceling, you have to hit L/R/Z in a window of 6 frames before hitting the ground in an aerial animation, and there is no down time on it (so in theory, you could shffl, then mash L and R back and forth and you'll still L-cancel. DON'T do this though, as you'll put up your shield repeatedly after landing, which has about 500 times the lag of simply not L-canceling. L-cancel with one press of L/R/Z).

As for learning the acual L-cancel timing when starting to play, it's not easy, but it's deffinitly not impossible ether. Just practice it in games. Eventually, you do it second nature. Focus entirely on L-canceling everything you do, don't worry about winning.

Ether that, or play Ganon for a while. Playing as him forces you to L-cancel, since you'll get ***** if you miss one.

Thanks for help really appreciate it ... you press L/R/Z when your close to the ground right? Well ive been practicing with link's dair and i think im starting to get the hang of things i got mates coming round and ill just focus on L-cancel... sometimes im putting my shield up when i land which isn't good i guess... once again thanks for the support :).

Right. A way of practicing that worked for me but got really boring is to just go into training mode and do every ariel attack standing then once you can L Cancel that try running jumping then doing it. For the shield i think its because your holding the button too long. You just need to push it real quick i think.

@preda: just notice how fast he get's up after each attack...

Or you go to training, dair an opponent and shine him. If the combo counter is 2, you've performed the L-cancel, but this was actually what I watched in WAKs Advanced How To Play Video with Fox...

MUGG that tactic works for Fox in training mode as ive done it a few times and i stated that earlier in this thread the thing is if you L-cancel with falco it doesn't show as a combo if you shine... Im getting alot better at this with link anyway and im sure ill get used to it with Falco in no time too... thanks for the help.

It DOES show it as a combo!
You just have to Dair late. that's also a trick: stun your opponent, so you have more time to shine. But it's only well done by using the C-Stick.

(hope you could understand my english)

Hey,
I'm new to Smash Boards as well, and i'd like to say that this thread looks pretty helpfull.
Since i am new to the advance technics as well, its true that its good to practise them while playing. I'm finding it hard to L-cancel in battles as well. But sometimes i manage to l-cancel an air attack, and it helps form a small combo. Like said many times, Practise makes perfect.
Thanx for this thread! ;)

For me I recognize a missed L-Cancel if i cant immediatly shine or run after an arieal.
try it out, you will notice, when you l cancel you will sooner able to run around etc.

Also practice L-Cancel on un-fastfalled SHFFLS (on SHLS >XD) und Full Jump Arials, with and without Fastfalls, Airials with a Double Jump etc.

Also very useful:

Go in training Mode and give your standind opponent a Super Star, so that he is invincible.
If you do a dair on him, the timing of the l-cancel is smiliar to this on a shield.

Many player mess up with ff and l cancel und shield hit lags ^^

You can see if you l-cancelled correctly with falco by shining immediately afterwards. Do it once as fast as you can without l-cancelling, and then do it while trying to l-cancel. If you did it right, then you'll get the shine out faster. Remember its a little different when hitting a character than attacking nothing so practice hitting characters.

l cancelling is pretty noticeable in all attacks, if you have been playing this game correctly. i find it easy to cancel the dair of falco.
