For shffling nairs, I press L when Falcon does the second kick.

i think it depends on when you fast fall. I always was wondering when is the correct time to fast fall the nair and l cancel it. Basically how do you properly shffl a nair.

I prefer to fastfall right after the second kick, and also as I press down on the control stick, I am also pressing R to L-cancel.

The way I practice canceling my nairs is to take falcon to the home run contest and see how far you can juggle the sandbag with nairs alone. I got about 200 feet before the sandbag touched the ground.

I find this an awesome exercise to help cancel your aerials correctly and perform another action the second you touch the ground.

about shffling nair -
the earlier you hit A after leaving the ground, the earlier you can fast fall
and because the earlier you fast fall, the earlier you land , the better, you should try to fast fall asap as long as the 2nd kick doesnt cancel.
anyway, L-cancel's timing doesnt realyl change. right before you hit the ground.
later you develop a rhythm to shffling, one-two-three-four... you know
just practice

Just get into the habit of hitting/tapping L each time you land after you do an aerial (even if the lag seems like it's over).

check the advanced how to play video. it will explain most noob questions such as this. seriously, that video taught some of my friends how to play (having come about 3 months too late for me)

If your shield is popping up, maybe you are pressing the L-R trigger too much and you have to wait the trigger to return to its original position. Try to press the triggers less, or use the Z button instead (I had the same problem when I started to L-cancel).

if your shield pops up then you may have cancelled fine, but this partially defeats the purpose of cancelling, which is to speed up your character. You can't be speedy while standing in a shield. Try to click L once right before you hit the ground, then let go of it. It can be a bad habit to break

My theory is that L needs to be depressed in some state when the landing animation starts. Since you press right before and let off, the trigger is still partially 'pressed' (since it's pressure sensitive) when the animation begins, so it skips directly to being cancelled. I'm probably completely off, but whatever.

actually, the l button (or r button) needs to be depressed more than it was on the previous frame in one of the six frames directly prior to you landing. that's how l-cancels work. for all characters and moves (except some of G&W's aerials can't be l canceled). Also, you can press z instead of having l depressed more. If you really wanted to, you could slowly move L in across the entire time from starting you're aerial to landing, and you'd be guaranteed an l-cancel. just note that if the button goes outward, there is a 20 frame window that you can't l cancel w/ that button afterward (the other two options still work)

basically the best way to be sure you get it... is it just hit L or R as soon as you touch the ground that way no matter what you do you will always cancel the lag
