i cant seem to find an answer so im asking

if i hit someone with an attack, ill deal damage and knockback to them. but is the knockback done after or before dealing damage?

if it's not clear, im simply asking if the character gets launched based on how much damage he had before or after he got hit?

Ironically, neither. Knockback is a more complicated formula.

The knockback factor (aka: KBG) is multiplied by the damage dealt before taking into account the current % of the opponent. BKB also plays a role.

Here's little-mac's data for instance. http://opensa.dantarion.com/s4/mastercore2/index.php?char=littlemac&mode=view104

Its a bit raw, but people are still trying to learn how to read it all. A lot of it is the same from Brawl however.

Assuming Smash 4 uses a similar KB formula as Brawl/Melee (not taking into account rage, which I believe is just a mutliplier applied at the end of the calculation), this should give you an idea: http://www.ssbwiki.com/knockback

In Brawl and Melee, knockback is thus applied after dealing damage. This also happens in Smash 4, as far as I can tell. Damage and hitlag happen simultaneously, and after hitlag has worn off, the target experiences knockback. As for calculations, knockback is probably calculated at the same instant that damage is dealt.

Indigo Jeans is more knowledgeable than me in this sector. So favor his post over mine.
