Smo
Smash Journeyman
Ok, I've been using this set up all the time I've been playing SSB64. I don't claim to be any good at the game, because I only play it occasionally, but I find this control setup really easy to use. I've showed it to my friends and they now use it because it really works.
Here's how it works:
W, A, S, D = the analogue stick
Use these to move. You can't walk easily, but anyway.
Spacebar - C up
This is your jump button. It is much easier to short hop using this button than it is to shorthop with W. Sits nicely under your thumb.
Shift is the taunt button (L).
Use the F key as R. This is one key which might be a good idea to change if you use R to grab, but I use Z+A anyway, so it doesn't matter to me.
Ok, now the buttons which no one seems to know how to position. You want it to be possible to reach A, B and Z without moving your hands. The first thing I thought of was "how would I do it on a Nintendo console?"
Of course, on a Nintendo A is to the righ and above B. So I turned to the number pad.
A = number pad 6
B = number pad 2
Pretty simple really. Use your first finger on B and your middle finger on A.
The final important placement is Z. Z should be very accessible because you use it to shield. I placed it on...
Z - number pad 0
number pad 0 is really big, so no accidents here. You can easily press 6 and 0 at the same time to grab as well. Use your thumb for this button.
Your right hand should now be in a "claw" position with the thumb covering 0 (Z) and your fingers covering 2 and 6.
This is about it. Put start where you like (maybe number pad Enter so you don't have to move your hand to press it).
Enjoy.
