Ok, I've been using this set up all the time I've been playing SSB64. I don't claim to be any good at the game, because I only play it occasionally, but I find this control setup really easy to use. I've showed it to my friends and they now use it because it really works.

Here's how it works:

W, A, S, D = the analogue stick

Use these to move. You can't walk easily, but anyway.

Spacebar - C up

This is your jump button. It is much easier to short hop using this button than it is to shorthop with W. Sits nicely under your thumb.

Shift is the taunt button (L).

Use the F key as R. This is one key which might be a good idea to change if you use R to grab, but I use Z+A anyway, so it doesn't matter to me.

Ok, now the buttons which no one seems to know how to position. You want it to be possible to reach A, B and Z without moving your hands. The first thing I thought of was "how would I do it on a Nintendo console?"

Of course, on a Nintendo A is to the righ and above B. So I turned to the number pad.

A = number pad 6
B = number pad 2

Pretty simple really. Use your first finger on B and your middle finger on A.

The final important placement is Z. Z should be very accessible because you use it to shield. I placed it on...

Z - number pad 0

number pad 0 is really big, so no accidents here. You can easily press 6 and 0 at the same time to grab as well. Use your thumb for this button.

Your right hand should now be in a "claw" position with the thumb covering 0 (Z) and your fingers covering 2 and 6.

This is about it. Put start where you like (maybe number pad Enter so you don't have to move your hand to press it).

Enjoy.

There's already a kb set up thread a few threads below this one and I remember having a lengthy discussion on it with a few folk months ago so that thread is miles back lost in the midsts of the SSB64 forum, I gathered you were just letting us know your preferences but you should check out those threads also as you might find a more suitable configuration that you never even thought of. First post in ages :D

My old keyboard set up

W = up
S = Down
A = Left
D = Right

1 = A
4 = B
2 = Z <- Number Pad
3 = R
9 = L

Up / Down / Left / Right = C buttons
or
use 0 on the Number pad as a C Button

W A S D to move? Thats insane.

I use the arrow keys, it only takes a bit of time to get used to it, and your fingers don't get cramped.

Buttons:

A(keyboard) = R
S = Z
D = B
F = A
C buttons =
left: Delete
right: page down
Up: Home(soon to change for shorthopping)
Down: End

This setup is easy on the fingers, and it has all the essential buttons for ssb64 online right there at your finger tips. I don't use the C buttons to jump, I think spacebar will be up C since I'm gonna switch.

I think your method would be annoying for me, but then again, thats just me.

W A S D is common for most fps or mostly any game that uses keyboard for movement, also using the arrow keys would be difficult mainly because on the n64 controller you have to use your left hand to move the control stick and having arrow keys as the right hand. I think it would be difficult thats all.

that is very true. but again this is a keyboard. you can do whatever you want with it.

however i suggest not to SH with space. unless you have a demented keyboard spaces are usually big long cuboids. and it would be difficult to swifty press for SH compared to the letter keys.

I would not move easily at all with W A S and D. My setup:
Arrows to move
A=G
B=H
R=F
Z=Space
L=Shift
Start=Enter
I tried alot of different setups before sticking with this one. The arrows take a little to get used to, but they work well. The G, H, F setup I like because it lets your thumb rest nicely on the spacebar
