my friend has recently started beating me really regularly with sheik, mostly by shield grabbing me and then comboing the **** out of me. but if i wait for him to make a move, he just needles me to death and then comes in with the volleyball smack. when i go in for a dash grab or JC grab, he ground dodges and then owns me. what do i do?

I recently learned how to shffl aerials and such, but i'm not too good at it yet so i keep getting shield grabbed and owned with that too. rarely seems to connect against human players. any tips, for either of these problems?

space forward air with tip. use downtilt. it's marth's best move after forward air.

space your aerials so they connect from as far as possible. As for getting that grab in, you should draw out his spot dodge with dash dancing and grab him after he does it.

basically they're all right... but here's my big tip

DON'T

GET

GRABBED

so yeah, moving on... if he ground dodges, do like these guys are saying and wait for it, then punish him for it.

and if you're not confident about your shffl's... i wouldnt advise doing them a lot... its more allowable (some word like that) to do it in a friendly, but just try to solidify your game and your mindgames before you worry about that stuff yet

thanks all, this is very helpful. I've noticed that once sheik gets into a rhythm i'll just keep getting comboed all over the place. Is there a good way to break her rhythm and go on the offensive? I used to be able to keep juggling her with uairs and chained fairs until i hit the gound and get a tip in, but sometimes she just volleyballs me out of nowhere and breaks my rhythem. and then, of course, the subsequent ownage...

Wow, you're in Baltimore? How close to Southwest are you good sir? Or Catonsville for that matter. There's a tournament happening there tomorrow (click my sig), you should come through, you'll get better advice and learn anti-shield grab tactics in person.

I always have the same problem. Most Sheik players will dominate me, though it is a mental thing that I need to get out of. Most of the time, I try to DI and just look for an opening. Your Counter (Down+B) can throw a Sheik off his timing, and if you can start shffl'ing your aerials, taking the offensive shouldn't be a problem. But once you have Sheik on the defensive, you'll start getting needled to death. In the air, those fly downward at an angle, so spacing is key.

Oh, and if you can shffl your aerials really well, I've heard a fair, uair, fsmash is incredible against Sheik.

When you're going in for a jc grab or dash grab, dash dance so you fool him into thinking you will come in and grab him and he'll most likely dodge, so in his lag you can just sneak in for a grab.

Hilaxial, do as Btree said and come to a fest/tourney in the Baltimore area. Go to Regional Zones < Atlantic North and there are two in the Baltimore area alone. If you can, go to Chudat's fest in Falls Church, VA, but that's unnecessary.

What you need to throw off the sheik is more moves in your pocket. Right now it looks like you're only doing fairs or nairs. Fake that sheik out by running past her (instead of grabbing her) to a crouch cancel then fsmash her. Btree can tell you better than anyone else that this move works wonders, particularly against people not used to it.

Basically, you need to be less predictable. Dash dancing, wavedashing, wavelanding, anything you can do to vary up just continuous attacks will help.

Also, LEARN TO L-CANCEL like a madman. It really helps keep the pressure up.

The CC d-tilt is an incredibly useful move. I can't think of a move I use more against Sheik players. Sheiks are tough for Marths, but less-so as you reach higher levels of play. At the begginer level a Sheik-on-Marth match is just ugly. Sheiks speed dominates Marth's long-lasting dodges. It's important when fighting a Sheik that you get out of the habit of blindly sidestep dodging and rolling. Use your range to hit them before they can hit you. When you have to take up the defense, shieldgrab. If you sense a grab coming on, rather than sidestep-dodging it, wavedash or shorthop away and punish them.

And if you feel you are at an insurmountable disadvantage, then try foxing him. Fox's quick dodges don't fall prey to Sheik's quick attacks, and his fast-falling nature makes comboing him a lot more difficult.
