Just some hypothetical speculation...

Looking at some posts on here, I think I should just preface this with a few disclaimers:

I don't think Sheik is out of the game.
I don't think Simon Belmont is going to be the next third party representative, as there are more important third party characters that could get his spot.
Shoddy translations prove that Ness is neither confirmed nor deconfirmed (not that this relates, but for some reason, posts have always been going there).

A friend and I were talking over lunch about some character speculation (because we're total nerds and that's what nerds do) and the prospect of Sheik being in the game came up. Due to Sheik's popularity, we both agreed that if the character is not in the game due to technical/continuity issues, it would be very likely that a clone would replace her. Then we went on wild, fanboy rampages on characters that could fill this gap. Our end result? Simon Belmont. The moves wouldn't be necessarily indicative of his Castlevania games, but rather games in the Castlevania series. Quick on his feet and very capable in melee combat, Mr. Belmont seemed a natural choice to us once I mentioned him. Even the specials wouldn't have to be changed too much. The whip would stay the same, the dagger would stay the same, and I'm certain the flavor of the teleport could remain with some minor aesthetic differences.

Now, this is really just here as a way to speculate on possible replacements for popular characters. If anybody has any other ideas for characters that could take the spiritual place of other characters, post your ideas here. My only request is that we keep this civilized.

Theres been speculation surrounding Zero Suit Samus's playstyle. Some of her techniques have Sheiks feel on them, because of this, its assumed Zero Suit Samus might have lowered Sheiks chances of appearing in the game. Then, Luigi's playstyle resembled Mario's in melee, so theres still a chance Sakurai is willing to overgo the possiblity of having 2 characters with a similar feel to add a major Zelda character.

Right, which definitely adds to the pure speculation of this idea. However, I'm thinking more of almost (emphasis on almost... clones, as a concept, bug me) direct clones to replace the characters than characters who simply feel similar. Something closer to ZSamus/Sheik, although I've heard that she really does play quite differently than Sheik, than Luigi/Mario, as the two really felt like very different characters that happened to have similar specials.

Did I? I may not have explained myself properly in one of my posts, then, and for that I apologize.

What I'm looking for is ideas of characters that could replace others by filling in the same role they did and by utilizing, more or less, the same moveset. The moveset doesn't have to be completely identical (for example, Sheik's specials could be altered when she is translated to a different character for the purpose of this thread), as long as the staples remain the same. Think of it as a mega pallette swap with the possibility of changing a few moves that, more than likely, wouldn't be used anyway.
