So I just got a PAL version of Smashstack and I have it set up on my SD card. The question is, what do I do from here? What can I do with Smashstack? What can't I do with Smashstack? How do I go about doing these things?

To make things perfectly clear, I have no intention of messing with my firmware or doing anything that will permanently change files on my wii.

The purpose of Smashstack is to allow you access to Homebrew apps (usually Gecko OS) through going to Brawl's Stage Builder without having to actually install the HBC on your Wii. The only real flaw with this is the disabling of custom stages that's required so you don't crash.

You just need the Gecko OS .elf file at the root of your SD and the Smashstack file moved onto your Brawl Stage files on the Wii (or maybe you don't even need that).

Get Riivolution. PAL users have worse situation when it comes to hacks (I know what I'm talking about, I'm PAL). With Riivolution, you'll be able to replace any file, while with Gecko OS you'll have to rely on cheats, which are outdated compared to their NTSC counterparts.

I'd provide a link, but there are some weird rules about Wiibrew here.

It doesn't require installation, it's fully optional.

Ok, so I've got Riivolution there now but I'm apparently supposed to be using .xlf (or something similar) files with it. What do I do now and how many separate programs do I need before I can finally get mods working?

Riivolution can read files that the FPC can't anyways (like smashbros_sound.brsar) so it's pretty much the superior option anyways.
