I don't know if anyone has pointed this out yet and i know this is late, but seeing as how Sonic was the most anticipated character in the game, it seems like they just made the announcement to ease people into the news of the delay. It just seemed like Sonic would have been the last character they would reveal, but since they had to delay the game they chose to bring him out early
