If you can discover one after a couple days of playing the game then is it a true advanced tech? I think it may be jumping the gun a little to start claiming true advanced techs are being found at this point. I think it is safe to say it is an advanced tech after the NA release and well down the road like 6 months to a year after we see people winning with them and/or pulling off some sick, impressive flashy stuff with them.

Logically it takes a while to perfect an advanced technique that is already known. It takes even longer to discover your own. If you think you are pulling these off after a couple days of playing is it legit to tack the word "advanced" on technique?

what do you guys think?

If I found out how to cancel the lag after any smash attack or increase my survivability by two fold, it's an advanced technique, no matter how long it took me to stumble upon it.

I don't think shorthopping was in Melee's manual. But shorthopping has been in a lot of games since the arcade days, so I would put that under 'common sense' techniques. lol

The OP is right though. No way, an AT will only take like two days to discover. Unless you were lucky.

I completely agree with OP, and I've been thinking this for a while too. Everyone's just trying to immediately find advanced techniques, but it doesn't work that way. We still have a lot to learn about the BASICS. Of course we do know a lot about the basics of Smash in general, but there is still a lot to learn about the things specific to Brawl. Most people (to my knowledge) who have the game are still not even fully used to the way it handles yet.

I thought it was really ******** when everyone went to the first E for All Brawl demo and immediately slapped their names on anything they saw in the game that seemed out of the ordinary.

I don't think there's a time frame for these kind of things. The reason they're being found so quick is because people are digging really hard to find them. Most of the people finding these things out seem to have had a pretty good understanding of Melee/SSB64, making it easier to find these things out.

I think it depends. Most techniques that aren't in the manual or meant to be in the game are considered advanced. Mostly things that casuals wouldn't use in regular play. Advanced techniques don't have to take eons to discover. I think the most worth while ones will stand the test of time though.

it's all semantics really, you can call them what you want, but they are techniques. As Lance said it is different this time around as there are people who are immediately digging in and exploiting the game as much as possible, where as there weren't as many people and we certainly weren't as organized about it back with the original and melee.

I guess what I'm getting at is there is no need to stratify differences between techniques, semi-advanced, advanced etc. They are all the same, they are actions that can be repeated by anyone that are not regular attacks such as B-moves, A-moves, Smashes, Aerials, Shield/Dodges, but rather a combination of tactics.

Undoubtedly there will be more down the line but that doesn't mean what is being put forth now are not genuinely going to be used often in competitive matches.

I'd be careful with the "not in the manual" part though, obviously aerials are not advanced, and in melee the game shows and makes mention of ledge hogging and samus and link's grab recoveries.

I do thinks that it is true though that the ones that are actually used will be remembered, while the pointless ones will be forgotten so really it's a non-issue.

also to the below post, he is right, only people who can test the moves should really be saying much about it, I mean I know sometimes we see stuff in a video and are like "look at this" but considering how low quality some of the videos are and the fact that you can't test what you think you saw it's kind of irresponsible because it's just high speculation, but the main threads on adv. techs are being done by people who DO have the game.
