Is their an advantage of using X/Y to jump instead of just using the control stick to do it? A lot of people use the buttons but I really never had any use for using X or Y to jump. Then again, I haven't played at a tournament level so I might be oblivious to some things.

Using a button allegedly makes it easier to short hop and control your aerial momentum.
Sometimes using the stick is nice, too (e.g. for shine > immediate bair with falco, it's pretty convenient to shine them, hit up on the control stick and bair on the c-stick, so everything happens really fast).

That being said, I think Lovage was (is?) using the control stick to jump, so it's by no means impossible to go that route.

About that, i'm not exactly sure if that would help me in my case. I can't really press any of the jump buttons lightly when i'm really in to a match because i'm more focused on other things like spacing myself and trying to attack so I might full hop out of haste. With a control stick, it's somewhat easier for me. Probably because i've always been playing like that since I first played Melee in '03.

Just curious, how important is using the X/Y buttons to jump for Marth and Young Link?

As I said: I don't think it's ever mandatory. It should just make things easier in most cases.
Are you reliably getting the maximum aerial momentum with control stick jumps? If so, I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with it.

In case you want to learn short hopping with x/y: I found it pretty helpful to not actually focus on doing a short press of the button, but rather do an aerial really quickly afterwards.

I can't short hop with the stick, but the stick is the only way to do a long hop, which is useful for Break the Targets! and the Planet Zebes escape.

I prefer using X because (for me at least) it's easier to combo with. I agree with Anikom, I can't short-hop with the stick. It's personal preference for the most part.

This is a hard topic to give a good definitive response on since it is mainly opinion-based, but here are my thoughts: I have tap jumping on in my controller settings because for general movement, it feels more fluid to me. However, like Xyzz said, using x/y as a jump is more reliable and, to me, easier to do effectively. What the discussion will always boil down to is personal preference, so as for the idea that you are missing some secret uber-competitive technique, no, you are fine! Hope I could help!
