Pretty self explanatory; I cant find it in a brief look through the Direct... maybe it was a PotD recently? I think direct, when they show ZSS. Did regular samus have a jet on her back?

I think you're talking about the boosters that are built into Samus' suit:

Those were pretty much just fancy effects that "explain" how she double jumps (both in the games and in Smash).

She's had it since Melee.

They also appear/activate whenever she does the sense move in Other M.
