I just picked up Falco about three weeks ago, and I'm looking to the jump-canceled shine as a bread-and-butter follow-up to my SHFFLs. I started off learning it by pressing Y (I use claw grip), but I discovered that quickly pushing the Control Stick up after the shine input--with the control stick in the down position--is more consistent for regular jumping out of shine. However, short hopping out of the shine (especially at an angle for cleaner follow-up) is a tad harder with the control stick since you have to flick it up instead of pushing it towards the top.

Which one do you guys prefer? Which one is better for combo/punish pursuit out of the shine?

Thanks for any tips, you guys are awesome!

I use Y to jump in some instance and Control Stick in others.

Shield Pressure -> I use Y because it makes it easier to get the short hop after shine.
Shine Grabs -> I use UP on the Control Stick because it makes the timing/speed of it easier for me
Wave Shining -> I use Y because it makes the timing easier for me
Shine Combos -> Y because it's more comfortable for me and I can control if I want a full hop or short hop to follow up
Ending Combos -> If I'm doing something like Shine-Dair or Shine-Bair to end a combo I will use up on the control stick because it's faster.

I don't know how this works with claw though just find what's comfortable for you. Mostly I use UP when I need the speed, Y for when I want more control over my jump. You should get quicker as you practice though and cancelling shines, with whatever button, shouldn't been an issue soon enough :).

If you measure the distance from the Y button to the B button and the X button to the B button you'll see that the X button is about 1cm (about half an inch) further from the B button than the Y button (all measures taken from the center of each button). So we could argue that using Y might be the easiest way (because is the shortest distance) to do every technical trick that involves jumping and then using a special move.

Of course, this only applies if you use one finger to move accross the jumping button to the B button. If you use claw grip, then you can completely ignore all of this, all that matters is your timing, and there's only one thing that you can do to be better at it, and that's practice, practice and more practice.

On the other hand using the controller stick might be unreliable and difficult, specially because the controller stick loosens up with time and it gets difficult to input a full jump or short hop at will.

I personally use X for everything that is not doing multishines with fox.

If you claw, it doesn't matter what button you use. Personally, I think clawing is the best way to go. It will be more awkward than FHing with the control stick, but it's way easier to SH with, and you can control your aerial drift better when you are jumping with Y. Just stick with clawing Y and you won't have any limitations on your inputs at all. I kind of regret not clawing because I have certain situations where controlling my character while inputting jumps/attacks is awkward.

FYI: It doesn't matter how far you press the control stick. The only thing that matters is that you release it to neutral before your character leaves the ground (ofc, the less you move your stick, the quicker it can return to neutral). The same is true with X/Y. It doesn't matter how hard or deep you press the buttons as long as they are released before your character is airborne.
