I'd recommend you buy the text book Yookoso. It's expensive, but it helps you learn the basics pretty quick.

ughhhh...sure there isn't any cheaper way? I mean I actually have a rosetta stone set that teaches it, but I was just wondering if there was like a great website or something, I'm actually really nervous about it and am afraid of messing up real bad and making him/her feel lonely since I can't communicate. Besides, I don't have that kind of money on me yet.
edit: oh one more thing, if your pming someone, do you just have to write it and click submit, or does one have to "forward" it?

Just type and submit.

Maybe one of those electronic dictionaries would be a good idea? Can type in what you want to say and they say it in japanese. No idea how much they cost though.

Nah that would be useless to me I think, I've read a bit about Japan, and one of the things I found out is their sense of community. They basically accomplish things because of how comfortable they feel around their kind and because of how motivated they are to be another productive member. Because of that, I think (actually, it might even have been stated in that book) that if I communicated through some machine I carried around, I could say things correctly (which I couldn't, we actually have accents too whether we realize it or not), there wouldn't really be any type of communication. Of course then again the book was made like 37 years ago so maybe people have changed. I still don't want to talk through a machine regardless though.

Your exchange student SHOULD know a good amount of English. They're leaving Japan for the culture and experience, so they shouldn't be too depressed if you don't know fluent Japanese. Simple phrases, which Rosetta should teach you, should make 'em happy. They'll have fun teaching you some Japanese, too.

Really? That's definetly comforting to know. Still, I guess I should at least try to learn some though just in case. So I'm always open to suggestions. Thx for helping me out guys.

note:I wonder if he/she might bring Brawl...I don't even know if I'm actually getting the student and neither does the dude I keep pestering about it to, but if I do, that would be simply awesome!

How would you say Avocado in Japanese?
Probably like.. A-ba-ka-do unless they actually have a word for it.. which they probably do...

Heh I took two years of Japanese and I don't think I could even have a conversation with someone in Japanese without thinking about it long and hard...

I've seen stuff on that Rosetta Stone and maybe it works well. Though as it has been said, exchange students should know some English. I've had a student from China and one from Vietnam and both of them know sufficient English. But **** dude, that Chinese one is so smart...

Just go to some online translator, type in a bunch of stuff about Final Fantasy VII, and then memorize it. Problem solved!
