items in a no item match

yesterday with items turned to none i used king dedede's projectile and threw all three pieces of the dragoon and in another match i threw a smashball i think you have to turn items off individually to prevent d3 from reaching into his bag of horrors, it was amazing tho. anyone else done something like that?
