Item Tier List

Even though items have no competitive relevance that doesn't mean that we cannot discuss which ones are better that others and why. So how about we rank them, huh? However, their nature makes them difficult to compare, since things like the Warp Star are completely different from others like the Franklin Badge. Any ideas on how to do this?

I think it'd be fair to rate them on their maximum match sway, and then adjust for things like counter-play (how capable the opponent is of reacting to them), rarity (Master Balls are a lot less common than Pokeballs), and so on.

For instance, you'd have things like Boss Galaga, which has a maximum sway of taking a stock at 0%, but gets lowered due to being pretty easy to avoid, and being able to be struggled out of or destroyed. On the other hand, something like the Gust Bellows would stay very high tier, as there is very little counterplay to a persistent wind attack, and thus it can take a stock with very little effort against virtually (if not literally) the entire roster.

Of course, there's a ton of room for debate here, just like in a regular tier list. Mr. Saturn's kinda puny as a regular item, but if you DO end up shielding it, you're in huge trouble. Dragoon and Daybreak are effectively 1-hit KOs, but the difficulty of collecting all the pieces depends greatly on the matchup, stage, and skill of the players. And then there's the Team Healer, which is almost literally useless outside of doubles, and its risk of use basically make it F tier in singles (since it can heal enemies), but possibly higher in doubles. There's a lot to consider, but honestly, I'd find it an interesting discussion.

Pokeballs are inconsistent in viability, as all these different pokemon each have their powers that are advantageous, disadvantageous, but sometimes pointless. (I'm looking at you, Goldeen.) Because of the stage layout and hazards of several stages, the effectiveness of a pokemon abilities can fluctuate even further. For instance, some pokemon may be a nightmare to escape on small stages, but are easier to escape on some of the larger stages.

How would we rank the Smash Ball? On one hand, Olimar could get it, but on the other hand, Peach could get it...
It's still a unfair advantage I say A tier/ deciding if its upper or lower. See how many good smash balls there are vs bad ones

Lying about my country.
If we want a bottom tier item we should look no further than the Smoke Ball.

I don't care when one appears in the fight.

I don't care when I grab one.

I don't care when it hits my opponent.

I don't care when I'm personally hit by one.

It's the ultimate "meh" item.

Smoke Ball actually has some uses with mind games, simply put up a smoke ball and use dim cape as Meta Knight and my friends never knew what hit them. Although if their any good they'll see it coming so maybe it does suck :p.

Ranking the items is definitely possible, but probably will be quite difficult, much like a character tier list. The viability of items varies quite a bit based on which character is using them, which character they are attacking, and which stage they are used on. Some characters may love having a projectile-shooting item like the ray gun, while other characters might be hurt by their inability to use their jab/nair. Weighing matchups is one of the fundamentals of tier construction.

Items like pokeballs produce even more inconsistent results, since there's a degree of randomness, but that just means the tiers would have to factor in said variability. Think of it like G&W's judgement attack; randomness is nothing new to SSB tier debates. I would say pokeballs are overall quite useful, since most Pokemon are worth summoning, and seldom (if ever) do they negatively impact you. An item which is moderately useful 75% of the time, useless 20% of the time, and amazing 5% of the time (total guess estimates, btw) is totally worth grabbing. To really rank them, though, we'd need to do a matchup analysis of all the different Pokemon and consider their frequencies.

All that said, Gust Bellows for S tier.

I was thinking of golden hammers would be great S but they can sometimes be the ones that don't do damage and you are stuck with them. Gust Bellows could easily BLOW the competition!
I'll let myself out now...

You act as if every Final Smash needs to be destructive and explosive. You need to be SMART to effectively use her FS. I have no problems with it at all, it's pretty good. Seriously, your opponents don't move, giving you the opportunity to inflict free damage or a KO? And you can restore your health? WHAT A GOD AWFUL MOVE!

It only does 30% damage (even less than in Brawl), you need to be close to Peach to actually fall asleep, you stay asleep for even less time than in Brawl, and if you avoid the short range, you can steal the peaches. What a great move.

I was thinking the Super Star was be very high. Possibly next to Gust Bellows. Not as good as Gust Bellows mostly because it's easier to avoid the power of a super star and you are likely to get a lot more kills with Gust Bellows and doesn't disappear for a short time and you use it until it doesn't function properly. Also Gust Bellows doesn't run off the stage.

But what about Smart Bomb? I don't think it has the best knockback for a bomb and it is random when it wants to blow up. It can blow up in mid air, it can be bounced and not blow but sometimes will blow up if you try to get it, you can completely miss, it rarely ever in your life hits you and doesn't blow up, it could land near you and won't blow up as well. It's not the best to work with and I'm honestly afraid to use the bomb.

There are a lot of items where risk vs reward needs to be taken into account, such as the smart bomb as mentioned before, and the warpstar where you could fly right off the edge if you are not careful. That may change the ranking of seemingly great items.

That's my tire what you guys think, is there something I should change, what Item should be higher or lower on the list.
Assist trophy should be lower with 'dud' characters such as tingle, shadow, starfy and the such, maybe A or B.
Cucco is an unpredictable cluckster****, so it should be at most B tier.
Killer eye would be very easy to dodge on stages with platforms and then counter it. C tier
Deku nut is an item that you have to get to right away if you don't want it to blow up in your face, B/C tier.
Super Curry could be beaten with so many reflect moves on characters, but is still good for putting the beatdown on shields, so B tier.
Smash Ball still has destructive power, It should have it's own tier list too, I could get to that later maybe, But I think it should be A tier.
The Super Leaf can be really strong for effectively being a peach float for any character, like shulk who could spam nairs. B tier.
The Special Flag could be well used if you star KO someone and then use that time to use it.

That's all the problems I saw, but maybe I'm wrong.

Thank you for the feedback I really appreciate it ;). I will edit it so it but I think I keep the special flag where it at on the list because even if the flag give you a life or a K.O point it takes so long to the point that people can attack you making the item almost useless.

Wtf. Screw Attack is awesome! As Palutena jump, jump, Up-Air = KO at 60%. In general Screw Attack combos into your aerials well.

I attack Beehives/Cucco's on purpose because I can then proceed to spam counters all day.

Gust Bellows should be Meta Knight tier. They're beyond broken.

Assists should be on a high tier since Resetti isn't there anymore
